  11. Thanks, Chefren.

Today, I thought of creating my own UEFA Referee Rankings due to the circumstance that - to my mind - the First Group is not detailed enough.

These are the groups Carlos and I thought of (he will do it as well for CONMEBOL):
    - of course: ELITE
    - Anterior Successor Group
    - Main Successor Group
    - Downgraded Successor Group
    - Regular Option Group
    - Regular Group
    - Downgraded Regular Group
    - Talent Development Group (for referees from Second or Third Group of whom I think they could be promising talents)
    - Non-Fifa-Talent-Group

Carlos told me to name one group "Mülleimer" (german = dustbin)...I first wanted to name it like that but it would not be fair enough I think...
The other reason behind this small game is of course presenting my opinion about these referees and discussing it, but also to reveal an INDEPENDENT opinion.
The list will be published in the next days and will be updated quarterly.

  12. Bayern - City

    Referee Viktor Kassai (HUN)
Assistant referees Gabor Erös (HUN), György Ring (HUN)
Additional assistant referees Tamás Bognar (HUN), Mihaly Fabian (HUN)
    Fourth official Zsolt Szabó (HUN)
    UEFA Delegate Roland Tis (BEL)
UEFA Referee observer Manuel Diaz Vega (ESP)

    Manchester United - Basel
    Referee Paolo Tagliavento (ITA)
Assistant referees Elenito Di Liberatore (ITA), Massimiliano Grilli (ITA)
Additional assistant referees Mauro Bergonzi (ITA), Andrea De Marco (ITA)
Fourth official Antonio Danilo Giannoccaro (ITA)
    UEFA Delegate Kazimierz Oleszek (POL)
UEFA Referee observer Horst Brummeier (AUT)

  13. I think, Elite may be detailed as well, there are some referees that are top Elites may handle FIFA-UEFA finals, as an example Kuipers is trying to get in this group. It may be a little fuzzy to determine but needed IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Interesting appointments.
Jonas Eriksson did well in Manchester and now it's again appointed.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Eriksson showed a superb last season.
He had a good Group Stage in both competitions, Dortmund has negative experience with him as he allowed an offside goal by PSG (BVB-PSG 1-1)...I could observe him live in Arena when we defeated Valencia. Very calm, very convincing decisions and one has to take into consideration that it was a close and exciting game...
Eriksson could be one of the lucky guys who perhaps get a place in the Euro roster, as far as UEFA does not want to have two referees from the same country.
I did the ranking today, I divided the ELITE Group into MAJOR ELITE and ELITE..nice results, now I have to make a document...it is really hard to decide whether Bebek, Duhamel and Blom go into Regular Group or Minor Group...

    ReplyDelete
  16. I can now reveal the MAJOR ELITE, ELITE and ANTERIOR SUCCESSOR GROUPS:

MAJOR ELITE: FdB, Kassai, Webb, Rizzoli, Velasco, Brych, Stark, Benquerenca, Proenca, Skomina, Kuipers

ELITE: Atkinson, Lannoy, Meyer, Rocchi, Moen, Nikolaev, Thomson, Undiano, Eriksson, Cakir, Vad, Tagliavento, Clattenburg

ANTERIOR SUCCESSORS: Schörgenhofer, Gumienny, Kralovec, Chapron, Gräfe, Nijhuis, Strömbergsson, Kelly, Strahonja, Hategan

    the rest will follow soon

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am very content with the EL appointments. Especially de Sousa's appointment in Schalke-Haifa. Perhaps I will go in the stadium, would be great to observe him.

    ReplyDelete
  18. yeap, I will go there. Perhaps I will take the camera along with me; there could be some nice photos..

    ReplyDelete
  19. One correction: Real-Ajax, Ref observer is Shandor Piller, not Shandor Puhl.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Piller is another expression for Puhl..

Serge Gumienny replaces Markus Strömbergsson in the SPORTING-LAZIO ENCOUNTER!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Puhl/Piller is fixed, thx, thought that Piller woudl be the English official name for Puhl, never thought that they are two different refs

  23. :D
Kassai was weak, was not he? I have the impression that he cannot cope with his status at the moment, too relaxed, leak of concentration. Rated him with 5,5, what do you think

    ReplyDelete
  24. I will watch this match on Satturday and I will evaluate him at worldreferee.com. And if you think, that Kassai missed two/three penalties, the mark can't be higher than 6,5. Maybe grade-system at worldreferee.com isn't so good. I evaluate the referees from 1 to 10. 1-compromitation, 2-fatally, 3-very weakly, 4-weakly, 5-average, 6-good, 7-very good, 8-excellent, 9-fenomenal, 10-ideal. It's very important when we all have the same criteria. In addition to this, I use the following system: control x2, decision x5, neutrality x2, style x1 / 10 and now an average mark is really fair, because the decisions are the most important part of the mark. I really recommend this system.

    ReplyDelete
  25. e.g.
    Florian Meyer (GER)
    6 - control
    4 - decisions
    6 - neutrality
    7 - style
    6x2 + 4x5 + 6x2 + 7x1 / 10 = 12+20+12+7/10 = 51/10 = 5,1
Now, the mark is between decisions and the rest.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree that there is a need for another, perhaps just a more detailed system.

I always make it like that:
    Control (25)
    Calls (25)
    Style (20)
    Neutrality (20)
    Difficulty/Match importance (10)

If you miss three penalties, it is nearly impossible to get a mark higher than 7.

Yesterday, I was at Schalke Arena, was a good match, first half a bit boring...
Manuel de Sousa was very good, he reminds me on Olegario :D

Movement = Proenca, Outward Apperance and style = Benquerenca..

A seperate thread with a lot of photos will follow.

  27. interesting observers:
    Gocek: Hauge (observer)
    Nijhuis: Rosetti (observer)
    Gumienny: Marko (observer)

    Hi Suricate,

also interesting that Serge Gumienny was in the middle of Sporting - Lazio instead of Markus Strömbergsson as announced earlier by UEFA.

Maybe Jozef Marko - with regard to Elite Development considerations - was scheduled to observe the Swede who had to be replaced by the Belgian.

On the other hand: In this case, Gumienny would not have handled any UCL or EL encounter on the first two match days which also seems rather odd ...

    Kind regards from Vienna,
    Peter

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeap, that would have been odd..but on the other hand, Blom got no match either, and he is ELITE...
I think there are clear signs for a demotion of the dutchman. Perhaps UEFA has to react.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous30/9/11 19:25

    Hi Suricate,

and what about Aleksey Nikolaev who was not considered either so far - also a candidate for demotion by the end of 2011 after having whistled the all South American U17-WC semifinal Brazil - Urugay this summer?

    Kind regards from Vienna,
    Peter

    ReplyDelete
  31. IMO, there are some referees in elite, who are too weak to an elite category: Blom, Moen, Nikolaev. Schorgenhofer, Kralovec, Clattenburg, Kelly are better. And one thing else, if it will be Polish referee on Euro 2012, it will be Paweł Gil. The young, perspective referee. Excellent style and very good play feeling. Better than Borski. We have also great referee, who isn't on international lists. Daniel Stefański is perfect referee. Great decisions in every match, absolutely world class. It's a joke made by PZPN, that he is only national referee. Regards, Hubert from Poland.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Nikolaev could not convince me.
I liked him as Euro League referee, but his r16 match and Bayern-match were not that good.
But I do not think he will be demoted.
Blom's case is of course special.

Concerning the ED referees, I think that Kralovec is still in progress, Schörgenhofer could need one season as well, Kelly did not get so many matches (but he was good in Leverkusen!), to my mind Collum, Tagliavento or Clattenburg should be promoted. And as we all know: FdB and Busacca must be replaced, too. Perhaps all these names could be in Elite next year, Gräfe could be one of the lucky guys as well although I think UEFA will exchange Gräfe with Meyer sometime.
Hm it is a bit weird: FdB and Busacca, probably two of the best 5 or 6 referees in Europe in the first decade, are leaving international stage and both countries do not really offer prospects. Studer ok, but he has to learn a lot. Gumienny hm...

    ReplyDelete
  33. I saw Studer in many matches, please don't compare him to Busacca, it would be a shame for Massimo.

Guys, has anyone seen Kuipers match and the penalty given to Trabzonspor? The foul (handball) seemed out of penalty area.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I saw the incident, to my mind it was inside the box and a very good call, but I'll watch the situation tomorrow again.

Has anyone seen Atkinson today? Harsh red card, the rest was solid..in a tough match..

Studer has to learn, them we can say how good he is..
