UEFA Europa League - MD 1 - Referee Appointments

FOLLOWING THIS LINK YOU WILL FIND AN OVERVIEW OF THE OFFICIAL REFEREE APPOINTMENTS.

It is very interesting to guess how the referees are classified by UEFA with regard to the respectively appointed referee observer. Kovarik, Todorov, Mazic, Rasmussen, van Boekel and Hategan seem to be under special observation this matchday..well, it is no secret that Hategan, Kovarik and Todorov are great talents.

Following these two links you may find my own appointments for CL / EL MD2 (independent from real appointments):

EL

39 Comments:

  1. Rasmussen was on the stage along with Cakir, Collum, Nikolaev ,Vad, Schorgenhofer in UEFA talent meeting in 2008, since then most of the team members have risen up to further categories, but Rasmussen seems to miss some chances. I have watched him two times which were really solid performances. It seems that UEFA gives him another chance, I wish he gets good marks to be promoted to ED in near future.

  2. Before I saw his appointment, I really thought that the case Rasmussen would be a closed chapter as I agree with you, everything I saw from him was at least solid, more likely good. The U21 Euro 2009 was good as well, I remember his perfomances in Germany's group stage encounters.
I did not see him that often in UEFA club competitions, but I do not think he deserved these less and unimportant matches. Atlético-Celtic is (only considering the names) a top clash, assisted by Nörrestrand and Sönderby he has two of the most experienced European ARs, I think the conditions cannot be better, now he has to show his skills.

I do not understand why UEFA pushes Stavrev and Mazic in this pace. Mazic ok, Stavrev with an ok Euro, but these were unfortunately exceptions to the rule; Stavrev did not convince me in his matches and as Schalke fan I have to admit that I am afraid of Koukoulakis :D hopefully there is no beginning like our last very good UEFA season when Bebek helped us to lose..but in this case I cannot be neutral..

I think one can have some kind of feelings. Even though I did not see too many matches of Hategan, I did not expect anything else. I always make my own appointments for UEFA competitions for three years now and he always got good matches in my roster; the same counts/counted for Manuel de Sousa and Georgios Daloukas whose retirement is still a pity from my point of view, it was the best example inhowfar politics influence decisions made by those "independent" federations..

    Edward from Greece.

Congratulations for your blog. It is something different at the world of refereeing.

For the EL appointments I have 2 observations.

    1) Koukoulakis for your team is a great choise. As greek I have seen him in many games and he is a referee that is highly regarded by UEFA. IMO he will do well. BTW his last match at EL P.O. was Litex-Dinamo Kiyv and his observer was Hugh Dallas and his mark was good.
    2) I can't understand many of these appointments like Ayketin, Carlos Clos Gomez, Szolt Szabo. They seem strange since those referees are either inexperienced (Ayketin), or below average.

As for Daloukas as you mentioned him, it wasn't a retirement but a throw off the list since Olympiakos boss wanted him off the Greek Superleague and he controls the whole Greek football Federation.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I know the case, therefore I stated as "retirement" due to politics.
Koukoulakis did well yesterday, Stavrev was not good enough.
As I said before, I always make my own appointments and the development of those during a competition is INDEPENDENT from UEFA's ones. I had many more experienced referees in the roster, e.g. Schörgenhofer or Hansson.
However, one must say that UEFA's choice or way of choosing referees gets clearer and clearer.

    BTW: Thx for the compliment.

2 Observetions from 2 EL matches yesterday.

    1) Paok FC - Tottenham: Milorad Mazic (SRB): Mr Mazic was dreadful yesterday. He did everything wrong. He denied a more than clear penalty for Tottenham and he gave Paok a correct penalty BUT he dissalowed the goal because another player of Paok entered the Box. The problem with that was that Tottehnam's GK Cudicini moved forward during the shot so with 2 offences it was either a goal or a replay.
    2) Anderlecht - AEK Athens: Carlos Clos Gomez (ESP). I can't understand 1 thing. How on earth can a referee let the advantage on a penalty situation when the GK and the defenders had stopped because they thought that the referee gave the clear penalty, and the player who suffered the penalty scored. Unbelievable in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  6. hmm I did not see Mazic, but I saw the incident in the RSC-AEK match. Reasonable to my mind. There was no foul, if the ADD-ASS-REF-1 decides that, there is no reason for a penalty. To my mind he was correct when awarding no penalty, of course it seemed to be hard or unlucky, but no mistake at all.

I am thinking over my next appointments, I am "building" them at the moment...I will paste the pdf-doc-links later but your comment on Mazic destroyed everything (:D) because I wanted to designate him for Leverkusen-Genk, but well, this is passé now..

Match reports on worldreferee.com written by me on Stavrev and Koukoulakis.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I know 2 appointments from now. Leontios Trattou (CYP) has been appointed in Matchday 2 and Anastasios Kakkos (GRE) the same. Mazic was completely dreadful. As for AND-AEK incident IMO is a penalty.

    Hi Niclas!

    At 1:09 PM you wrote:

Robert Schörgenhofer will get a UCL MD 2 encounter on 28/09/2011 meaning that you need to switch him for designation considerations. ;-)

    Kind regards from Vienna,
    Peter

Jorge Sousa (POR) and Duarte Gomes (POR) are appointed to matchday 2.

About yesterday performances with portuguese teams: Aytekin had a good first group stage match, but not really under pressure. Van Boekel was under Dallas watch but he wasted the oppurtinity with a almost weak performance in Zurich.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Bad to hear that but honestly speaking, I expected it :(

My made appointments independent from UEFA and reality will follow in a few minutes, I have one surprise :D (one appointment is pretty brave..)

  11. appointments for matchday 2 (my own ones) can be found in the original post header..

Hey Niclas, what about your UCL MD 2 Group H appointments? ;-)

    Kind regards from Vienna,

  13. :D haha thanks, I totally missed them...but I think Chapron and Eriksson will get them.

  14. *updated, some changes

    ReplyDelete
  15. One update: Strahonja's assistants for international matches are Zeljko Novosel and Sinisa Premuzaj. Additional assistants should be Igor Pristovnik and Damir Batinic and fourth official Dalibor Mlakar. I'll check his team and tell you later. Croatian Referee Committee announced great news: At the Referee Course for elite, elite development and cat1 referees, Croatian Marijo Strahonja had best results in FIFA Fitness test. With great marks in last matches and this accomplishment I pretty sure Strahonja will get CL match this season.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I hope so...
I designated him in my system for a hard match and I am sure that he would be good in it in reality as well.
The fact that Strahonja developed in this pace makes it easier for me and probably UEFA as well to close the chapter Bebek (at least for CL).
Strahonja, Todorov, Hategan, Mazic, Stavrev...these are the future names from South Eastern European guys..only a feeling with Hategan but I am pretty sure that I am right in this context..

    ReplyDelete
  17. Niclas, I did a study about appointments in the UEFA Champions League group stage-matches, analyzing the whole group stage of the last year and the first matchday of this year, just passed.
Well, as you can see you too, every referee appointed is never of the same nationality as one of the four teams in the group, not only of the two teams of the match.
Based on this, I think we can make even more wisely predictions.
Furthermore, I have read your names for the second matchday: I think Thomson again for Villarreal it's impossible (last match for him in the playoff just Villarreal vs Odense) and De Bleeckere certainly will not come out in the group of Genk.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I do not know whether I am writing Spanish :D
THIS IS MY SYSTEM INDEPENDENT FROM EVERYTHING IN REALITY OR MADE BY UEFA!!

If it was real, it would be wrong, you are right.

    ReplyDelete
  19. * the FdB appointment was a lapsus, i will change that

    ReplyDelete
  20. Vladislav Bezborodov last year was the only exception. He was appointed in Spartak Mosca group, for Marseille - Chelsea in the last matchday. But it was a useless match.
However, I hope to read also new names in the next matchday, and not always just the same.
What about Blom? What will be his next appointment?

    ReplyDelete
  21. :D I really do not know...I am not sure whether UEFA gives him another chance..but I rather think they'll do.
Your aspect to see new names is very important.
Therefore I planned in my system to appoint names like Mazic, Strombergsson, Hategan, Stavrev perhaps, Strahonja for sure and of course Studer, Nijhuis and Vad

For English speakers... What did you mean by this: "Ich habe die Ansetzung von Schörgenhofer auch schon auf seiner Homepage gelesen"? Does Schorgenhofer has a web site or a blog? If yes, could you please let us know the URL?

    ReplyDelete
  24. = "I have already read his appointment on his homepage"

    http://www.schoergenhofer.at.tf/

Only by this homepage, Jan and I managed to get an interview with him. I do not know many referees who have that..Collum and Brych both have facebook, but FdB and Schörgenhofer are the only referees who have real homepages (as far as I am informed)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Schörgenhofer also announced that he is gonna get a Euro qualifier match again.

    ReplyDelete
  26. De Bleeckere also announced his appointment for a Euro2012 match on 11 October

    ReplyDelete
  27. Michael Koukoulakis also has a game on 7,8 October.

    Full greek team.

    Referee: Michael Koukoulakis (GRE)

  28. Thanks for this info.
Koukoulakis seems to have overtaken Kakkos.
I think I have forgotten him in the poll...would explain the 9 votes for another one..

  29. David Fernandez Borbalan (ESP) with a CL Matchday 2 game!!!

  31. Nice decision to give him a CL match.
After Iturralde there is the next Spaniard. Now there only has to be Strahonja, Studer, Nijhuis and Vad who also should get CL matches.

I wondered whether I forgot another referee in the poll: Manuel Jorge de Sousa..I actually like him and his style...could be a candidate to follow Benquerenca's and Proenca's footsteps along with Soares Dias in the near future cos I think that Xistra is no real option at all.

    ReplyDelete
  32. and I think we can easily guess which match will be overseen by Fernández Borbalán..either Otelul-Benfica or Shakhtar-APOEL. I also though of Trabzonspor-Lille and ManU-Basel, however I think UEFA prefers Elite or Development referees for these matches.

another info: Deniz Aytekin will referee matches in Slovenia when they face Belgium, Scotland and Wales (U19-qualifiers), Stefan Lupp has been nominated, too.

    Hi Suricate!

I don't think that David Fernández Borbalán is foreseen to take charge of FC Shakhtar Donetsk - APOEL FC after compatriot Eduardo Iturralde González just having handled an APOEL encounter on MD 1.

    Kind regards from Vienna,
    Peter

    ReplyDelete
  34. ah yes, I did not keep that into consideration.
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think we won't see Strahonja in CL Matchday 2, he is appointed for Europa League, Maccabi Tel Aviv-Dynamo Kyiv match. Also, EURO Qualifications in October.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Manuel de Sousa (in Portugal we call him Jorge Sousa) was the man in charge of Porto-Benfica last friday in Dragao. In that match he was observed by someone "very close" to Collina. Probably he has a chance to move up and take the place Bruno Paixao had last seaon in ED.

About Euro2012 qualifiers 3 portuguese ref teams will be present. 7/8 OCT Proença. 11 OCT Benquerença and Paixão.

Borbalan is a surprise for me in matchday 2 appointments. He can be present in Otelul - Benfica (for example).

    ReplyDelete
  37. I observed de Sousa as well in Friday's clash. To be honest, it was a hard match from the 1st minute, but finally one can say that he did well in general. He missed to my mind a straight red card for violent conduct, but although there were 10 yellows, it was good or ok.
Ok, UEFA calls him Manuel de Sousa, in Portugal he is called Jorge Sousa, I will call him Manuel Jorge de Sousa..

    Group F:
ARSENAL - OLYMPIACOS: VELASCO CARBALLO (ESP)
MARSEILLE - DORTMUND: UNDIANO MALLENCO (ESP)

    Group G:
SHAKHTAR DONETSK - APOEL: SCHÖRGENHOFER (AUT)
