Senes Erzik likes UNICEF

Further to several media reports and a public yell of indignation within the Portuguese media scene and even among officials of the Portuguese federation FPF, containing apprehensions that Turkish official Cüneyt Çakır, who will take charge of tonight's 2012 UEFA EURO semifinal between Portugal and Spain, could encounter the match in a biased way, I would like to congratulate these reporting brain-dwarves for having assured one of the best - but also easiest excuses for a potential loss against the Iberian neighbours in advance.

He likes UNICEF: Senes Erzik.. (c) trtspor

The reason for these worries was - no joke - that Senes Erzik, a member of the UEFA referee committee, would be in deep friendship with Spanish chairman Ángel María Villar Llona, that he would get something out of FC Barcelona and therefore liked their sponsors and international aid organization UNICEF.

I would like to wish Çakır and his team all the best for the pending match and I furthermore hope that - if he performs excellently - that the Portuguese responsibles and media representatives will find another excuse for a potential loss, perhaps the pitch might pose an adequate plea.

  2. Who told these guys such a bullshit??
For every decision, all Portugese bench were on the line to protest.. arrrggggh.

  3. The longer the match lasted, the better Cakir became, but the first half was not really on semifinal level IMO. The rest was superb, so overall a good performance.

    2. Niclas,

What are the issues that made you think that he was not in semifinal level? Only one I can say he didn't let play on for the foul to Nani. Rest of his decisions was right.
Agree, 2nd half and extra time he was really good. I believe he made it easy for himself with his decisions in first half.

      Ugur

I would like to ask you if there will be any kind of predictions post for the final referee of the euro championship?

Didn't catch the whole statement on TV yesterday, but a former Slovenian referee who is in contact with Damir Skomina, said that EURO for Skomina is over. Another was the statement of Mateo Beusan that Thomson, not to mention Eriksson, have no chances for the final. So we have to look for the final ref among Webb, Proenca and Rizzoli (pending on the result tonight, of course).

  5. Predictions were actually supposed to be maintained in the whole competition, but due to the big work with the reports, there was no real place for them.
No chance for predictions for the final, one could give the pool everyone knows (Rizzoli, Proenca, Webb), but the first chance for such a post would be tomorrow in the afternoon and then, we already know the final ref. But discuss it here. My prediction and hope is Howard Webb, I do not care about the fact that it would be his third big final in a row, that he was weak in the WC final and had not the best seasons in the past, but at this specific tournament, I liked him most apart from Proenca. But the Portuguese with Spain once again? After his own national team was thrown out yesterday by them? I think UEFA will avoid that. Rizzoli hm, I think he was not so good as Webb.

"But the Portuguese with Spain once again? After his own national team was thrown out yesterday by them? I think UEFA will avoid that."

If the same measure is applied to Germany-Italy, then it means that Rizzoli will not be appointed to the final whether Italy wins or loses. If Italy wins, then he obviously cannot. If Italy loses, then he cannot either because Germany directly eliminated Italy.

Given the teams in the semi-final, Webb can be the only choice if it is indeed only a choice between Rizzoli, Proenca and Webb. In fact, it was never a choice at all given the teams in the semi-final.

      Delete
    2. And therefore, Webb should be considered as the 99% final ref.

Not only do they split up a team - they give them the final as well... Nothing else then a disgrace if that turns out to be true. Bad enough that they id it in the first place, even worse that they got a QF... We will see what happens.

  7. Poor Germans without luck, poor Italians with luck, poor performance by Lannoy, phantom fouls - I stopped counting at 10 in minute 76 - wrong handball penalty, clear striker foul in advance. Lannoy stands for the whole tournament, inconsistent refereeing, I think after 30 matches this is the disappointing result. Now Webb 100%.

    1. Penalty probably given by AAR 2. I can't say that he was poor but not excellent too. Average performance. Excellent Assistants and as I told Fautrel with a double mistake (wrong penalty and foul first).

    2. While watching him I say: Wow, what a good decision, after seconds he randomly whistles for a foul for wrong team...Then I think, was the previos one random as well? All match long....

    3. I was surprised by Germany this evening, Niclas.
I have to be honest: they were poor as you wrote, they didn't play like the other times, they seemed tired, or I don't know what.
Why? Maybe they were already sure to win against Italy, but I don't think.
Lannoy? Mh, Lannoy was the classic Lannoy, I agree with Edward, not that bad anyway we know his style, and it was impossible to see a different performance this evening.
The only problem of the match was the penalty call by Buquet. It seemed sure that Lannoy was far and he wasn't able to see.
Anyway, it was a totally wrong decision: clear foul by the German player before, but that isn't all: the handball in my opinion was not punishable with a penalty because really quick and the ball was also hitting another part of the Italian player. It might have been a crucial decision, maybe the 2-2 or the 3-2! UEFA Committee was lucky. I don't know, this is a big problem with handballs, how we can solve it? Many referees are accostumed to give the penalty in every situation and for every touch of the hand or the arm, this is in my opininion a big mistake.
Anyway, talking about Italy, it is like a dream to be in final.
You said Webb, well, I would prefer another name, but I have to admit that it's difficult to think about Proença (Spain has defeated Portugal).
Is still possible a cance for a different name (not Proença Rizzoli or Webb)?

    4. Come on! We all know Lannoy, he makes that kind of mistakes, in all his matches, appart from that, the penalty hmmm, I would not give it, but I dont think it was Lannoy´s call, he was not going to call it, but his AAR did. The rest of the match was ok I think, appart from that common Lannoy mistakes. The YC for Hummels comes from his mistake...
Impresive was the way Howard Webb talks, also when he is as 4th, he talked, and talked all the match!

I agree with Chefren, Proenca is not likely, but I woul prefere him over Webb...

Oh niclas, stop it now, you don't like lannoy we Know That: excellent judgment of annonier on the second goal, Good décision of cano to cancel for offside italian third goal, disciplinary control ok with five justified yellow cards, penalty ok ( fouls of both players before not just attacker). Yeah One throw in wrong by cano, two faults so-so).

Yes, we all know that and we know some people can't be objective when their team is playing - a pity. Lannoy was good, really good. Some mistakes, as always, penalty CORRECT (foul before? not so sure about it), excellent call by Fautrel about alleged Pirlo's handball in the beggining - GREAT CALL. Assistant referee 1 - Frederic Cano - the highest possible marks for 3 ideal calls about offsides, Hummels fouled his opponent and yellow for protests were superb, phantom fouls are only Niclas' illusion :/ Full agree, Anonymous, let be serious Niclas, not so frustered by weak Germany's performance :)

If true, it's not the best. The most consistent and 'most faultless' referee was Webb, then Rizzoli, Cakir third and Proenca as fourth here. Don't understand it.

  12. It seems almost sure Proença, also "La Gazzetta dello Sport" here in Italy reports that Proença has been appointed, also due to the Webb - Spain problem...

  16. It was not an easy choice this time. I had a feeling that they didn't want to appoint Webb. So now it's Proenca despite Portugal being in the semis. But certainly not undeserved. I would have expected Skomina as 4O though.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Proenca and Cakir are for sure the best referees of this Euro(maybe appoitment of Howard Webb would be deserved but,I think that he wasnt appointed beacuse his performance in World cup Final in 2010) but a Slovenian I would like to see Skomina as fourth official but I think that this appoitment is deserved (Cakir).
And I must say that the youngest referees of this tournament (Cakir,Skomina) were much better than older (experienced) referees -Stark,Kuipers,Carballo.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I said Lannoy was bad. I did not say anything about Cano and Annonier. Apart from one wrong throw-in, they were excellent, especially in offsides and no offsides (see 80-85 minute).
Lannoy whistled at leeast 5 totally wrong fouls, call which irritated me. Boateng's alleged foul e.g., Kroos' foul, Badstuber's foul, Montolivo's 4th foul in the match (around minute 20 or stuff). Poor, very poor. Many mistakes on both sides, the most important thing is that it was an easy match. I did not recognize tension or poison there, some challenges, but no hard match, no difficult atmosphere. So we are talking about a semifinal at EURO, I think this performance was even thin for a group stage match. Again. EURO semifinal. Not EL round of 32. EURO!
And I also find it ridiculous that I am accused for criticizing Lannoy allegedly due to the fact that Germany lost - DESERVEDLY..you as countryman of this referee should not close his eyes that this was the old Lannoy yesterday, phantom fouls without ending. If you wish, I look for the minutes, I have recorded the match. No arguments and then saying: oh, be serious, you only criticize him because your team lost. That's funny and too easy guys ;)
And then, please tell me what about the added time. Italy wasted time already in first half, 2 minutes would have been ok, then many injury stoppages, 4 minutes. Still ok, but then the penalty came. Approximately 1 minute it took them. Can you explain to me why he correctly whistled the last foul (should have been yellow by the way), then allowed this last free-kick and suddenly makes the final whistle at 90+4:12?? I do not get that.
Sentences like "great mission" make me laugh.

    CONTROL 75
    DECISIONS 60
    STYLE 70
    DIFFICULTY 75
    =
    67,5

I also love these anonymouses not giving their name, any form of identity and then complaining that others do not know what they are talking about. Splendid.

And Chefren of course congrats, more deserved finalists than Spain, so I hope the squadra azzurra will make it. The reason behind the loss was however not Italy I think. What did they do except two chances they used and a few in the end resulting from Germany that must open their defence? "We", no, Löw made the mistake to change the line-up because he wanted to encounter Italy's way of play better by this. He made the same mistake in 2010 when he forgot to rely on "our" own strengths, our own play. 7 players of Bayern Munich, as always, crap, they have lost so much in this season, Schweinsteiger and Gomez are/were poor and perhaps you all recognized that when Reus came, everything became better, only the bad luck maintained.

Congrats to Proenca, the most deserved final appointment of the last years if you asked me. It is still surprising due to semifinal, but well, I am glad that this statute is neglected.

Your opinions please about the whole tournament.
Mine will follow in a separate thread soon. Many highlights and many disappointments and I have the impression that UEFA and their EURO officials received many instructions which they applied well but forgot the basics. This does not count for everybody of course. Assistant referees overall with a very great job to my mind.

Boateng's and Kroos' fouls were amazing calls made by Lannoy. See the movement of both, can you see it? I love guys who never stayed alongside pro refs and make such 'opinions' creating himself to experts. I can't understand it. Added time - it's a good observation, mr Niclas - Andreas

No arguments, huh? Your only argument is to sit with notebook and pencil and detect even smallest mistakes not recognizing the important perfect calls made by referees. It makes me laugh, really. Come on, leave that meticulousness 'evaluating' the refs and stay on the middle of the field. Then, with your knowledge you're be able to advance quickly and then finally you will have the ethical right to criticize international refs.

  22. The thing with Portuguese football and refereeing excuses is typical and historical. In Portugal, most of the media are pro-Benfica, then pro-Sporting and most of them totally anti-Porto. This has shown results - goods results I must say - when it comes to selling newspapers as Benfica gathers the majority of supporters who will buy and believe anything that is pro Benfica and against Porto. The way the media handles the national side matters is in all ways similar to the way it handles Benfica matters. Always selling them as the best team in the world, always promoting their players as world class acts, and when it fails, always looking for excuses in refereeing matters. There is no self blame to be considered here. It's always somebody else's fault. The rumours and suspicions regarding the Turkish referee follow exactly the same line of thought. Looking for extra football excuses, just in case. If any of you guys can read Portuguese, I invite you to browse through non-benfica supporters spots blogs, as they have pointed out the silliness of this suspicions. All in all, the referee did a good job, there were no reasons to suspect anything at all, and Spain won it fair and square.
