Damir Skomina gets UEFA Supercup call-up

Damir Skomina of Slovenia has been appointed to oversee next week's UEFA Supercup 2012 final between UEFA Champions League winners FC Chelsea London and UEFA Europa League winners Atlético Madrid. The match will be played at Stade Louis II, Monaco, at 20:45 CET.

For the tourism manager from Koper, it will be his second international final after 2007 UEFA U21 EURO final between the Netherlands and Serbia.
In 2011/12, he refereed both teams: After having whistled the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal second leg between Chelsea and Benfica, he also handled the UEFA Europa League semifinal between Valencia and Atlético.

  1. Deserved appointment for a young but already very experienced referee.

  2. In both matches he had with the two teams in April 2012, there were lacks of control, but the major calls went right. I like the appointment.

  3. Hmm, I think it is a bit too early, but we know UEFA appoints a bit less experienced referees to Super Cup. As I mentioned somewhere before, would like to see Lannoy in it, but I haven't problems with Skomina.

    1. @Niclas:

I understand what you mean, anyway I think that when you appoint a referee you must have also courage. There were lacks of control in his matches, as you have said, but in my opinion the quarterfinal Chelsea - Benfica was a masterpiece of Skomina, about calls. So, at the end this is the important thing. Maybe, time by time, he will gain major skills also in the control of a game. It's important to test him in this match, and under this aspect UEFA has done the right choice.

      @Yun Hyeon:

For a Champions League final it would have been too early, but his appointment in a Super Cup is justified, also for the reasons I have explained above. Furthermore, as you have correctly written, this Super Cup, being anyway a very important trophy, doesn't seem to have that prestige and that atmosphere of Champions League. The match is not so popular like the Champions League final but anyway is something better than Europa League final.

Of curse, this is just my opinion, best regards :)

  4. I beliave that this Super Cup is deserved appoitment for Skomina beacuse this will probably get him even tougher matches and in next seasons I would like to see Brych or Cakir or even Kralovec with this kind of appoitment.

And just one question does appoitment for Super Cup means that referee doesnt get any other finals like Europa league?

  5. How the hell is Raul Albiol still on the field? What is wrong with Mr Clos Gómez. I really like this ref but that what he is doing right now in the first half is a very poor show. In addition to this, two - three quite obvious fouls on Messi missed.

    1. Again realisation is Spain isn't at the high level. It was Xabi Alonso who was booked in the first half not Albiol as graphic was showing. However, two bookable offences by Albiol and no yellow card. The second half was really good. The rest will follow soon.

    2. CLOS GÓMEZ - 7,1 (missed penalty to Barcelona and red card to Xabi Alonso; fantastic positioning and calm relaxed approach)
CALVO GUADAMURO - 8,6 (faultless performance, helpful)
MARCO MARTINEZ - 9,6 (brilliant performance, three crucial decisions correctly taken)
      USÓN ROSEL - 8,2

      Report to follow soon.

  13. What is happening this evening in Juventus-Parma with the additional assistants!

In first half, there was a penalty given by the first additional (Carmine Russo) but Lichsteiner (fouled by Parma keeper Mirante) was in a clear offside (missed by first assistant Petrella). The penalty was missed, that was a good thing.

Then, Pirlo scored in second half for the 2-0:

Given by the second additional, Maurizio Ciampi (serie B referee).
I think that it's impossible to say if the ball it's in or out.

    Very difficult match!

  14. This is the offside situation, missed by Petrella in first half, after that, Lichsteiner got the ball and then a penalty, thank to the first AAR.
Can't believe to my eyes: the only explanation is that the assistant thought it was a backpass by Parma player.

  15. Kai Voss had something like that also a few years ago in Bremen-Bochum (refereed by Weiner). Missing conversation of course, they must consult each other from whom the ball came..Ciampi seemed to be determined and concentrated, one must rely on him. This AAR experiment is annoying me..

  17. Zunic confirmed instead of Stancin. Is that his new team?
Very interesting also to read Dallas name, anyway about Skomina there is not so much to observe ;) He got already a quarterfinal in Champions League, considering this appointment for Super Cup now, his next goal could be a semifinal...

    1. Super Cup is always given to a committee member to observe. So Dallas there is something natural. It is standard procedure.

    2. Thanks Edward.
I have read about PAOK punishment: 3 matches of ban. Very harsh decision.

      Delete
    3. And 1 year ban from Europe for a probationary period of 3 years. Plus 150.000 euro fine. And Rapid has the same punishment but with less money: 75.000. IMO expected punishment after what happened. People of Paok are going for an appeal but the cannot hope for big changes. PAOK is supposed to lose over 2.000.000 Euro from this punishment. That explains why it is harsh.

  18. Arhar cannot accompany Skomina in 2014, so it will be very probably one of his last matches. The fourth official mostly indicates something as well.

If I'm not mistaken Zunic and Rojko are planned to be Skomina's AR for the future.

Both UCL and UEL finals have had reserve ARs. I thought that the UEFA Super Cup will have a reserve AR as well.

      Delete
    2. Nope, Kuipers had no reserve AR either, although Velasco and Kassai had them in the finals before.

      Delete
    3. I think that another reason about the absence of fifth official is that now the fourth official is an assistant referee, so there isn't the need of another man.

      Delete
    4. Can be, but I again emphasize that there was never a reserve AR in super cup.
In 2011, CL had Robert Kispál as reserve ar and in EL it was Juan Yuste Jiménez. But nonetheless, no reserve ar in super cup for Kuipers.

  21. The appointment has been confirmed by UEFA right now, but Jubg will be the first AAR and Vincic the second.
Anyway, they are always accostumed to switch their positions.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Right, according to the information I have Vincic will be positioned as AAR1.
Chelsea will wear blue, Atlético red-white and Skomina will wear the yellow euro kit.
