UEFA Under-21 EURO 2013 - Match Officials are ready

European football governing body UEFA has released the six referees who will take charge of matches at next year's UEFA Under-21 EURO 2013 that will be held in Israel. Three officials currently belonging to UEFA's Elite Development (ED) Group of referees and three officials who are joining the First Group of referees each have been selected.

Ovidiu Alin Hategan of Romania (c) ZIMBIO

Referees:
Ivan Bebek - Croatia - 30/05/1977 - Elite Development Group (since Dec. 2012)
Serhiy Boiko - Ukraine - 30/06/1977 - First Group (since Dec. 2012)
Antony Gautier - France - 19/11/1977 - Elite Development Group (since Dec. 2012)
Pawel Gil - Poland - 28/06/1976 - First Group (since Dec. 2010)
Ovidiu Alin Hategan - Romania - 14/07/1980 - Elite Development Group (since Dec. 2012)
Matej Jug - Slovenia - 25/09/1980 - First Group (since June 2011)

  1. I will try to say something about all the selected officials.

Bebek: for sure the most experienced referee among these names, even though still quite young (35), he has two important FIFA tournaments in his palmares and many Champions League matches. By the way, as Niclas wrote in the previous post, it seems that UEFA wants to start again from the beginning with him, not considering his past.

Boiko: the less experienced man of the whole selected team, just 2 matches in Europa League group stage this year and nothing else for now, he will be the most interesting referee to observe, of course.

Gautier: due to Chapron demotion and Lannoy injury problems, he is at moment the most regarded French offcial, his promotion in Elite development is an important signal. He should take definitively the place in French international scene when Lannoy will have to retire (I think after the WC in 2014).

Gil: Important and probably unexpected appointments in CL this season for the Polish referee, which has overcame his compatriot Marcin Borski. Now, he has to consolidate his leadership, as best Polish FIFA referee. Under 21 tournament will be the right chance.

Hategan: the young Roumanian doctor-referee is a hope for his country, he showed solid performances in his last UEFA matches, by the way in my opinion he still needs to be tested in important situations, and the Under 21 Championship is the most suitable tournament.

Jug: probably the same speech made for Hategan, but Jug in the last months seemed a bit forgotten by UEFA committee, not so many appointments, he will be the youngest referee in Israel, and of course in case of good performance, he could also be promoted.

UEFA should have appointed (if they follow always the same pattern) also 8 assistant referees from different countries and 2 fourth officials. One of the fourh officials should come from the host nation, Israel. The strange thing is that 2 years ago in Denmark, we had Kenn Hansen as stand by representing Denamrk, and the other name was Liran Liany, the Israeli referee. Now, I can't think that UEFA has in mind to appoint him again as fourth for the same tournament, so the selected official from Israel should / could be Ei Hacmon or Menashe Masiah. Almost impossible to see Yefet, a too experienced referee for that role.
    What do you think?
    Your bets about assistants?

  4. I don't understand those political games.
For example Pawel Gil was at U-19 final tournament last year, performed quite well in comparison to for example Tom Harald Hagen (who was promoted to ED after this tournament) who showed in my opinion below average performance there.
Also at this tournament (refereeing final) was Stuart Atwell who has now wanished from Uefa fields.
Does this mean that Gil is suddenly a candidate for something more or is this nomination just repaying collateral damage he suffered in Romania.

I also don't like Bebek's nomination but who cares. We just need to wait when Croacia Osiguranje (biggest insurance company in Croatia) will become UCL sponsor...

  5. Reasonable appointments to my mind. Every single referee has been under the observation of the community of this blog so now we know them.
One small concern for Boiko since he is the most inexperienced of the 6 officials. Maybe the only political choice.

    1. Unfortunately, it's quite normal in Barclays Premier League... I mean this whole inconsistency in applying individual punishments. I saw many red cards for much softer slides as well as I saw such decisions... Referees in England are NOT punished for bad performances, many matches are without observers (matches are watched by PGMOL then), so this lack of natural control and system of punishments lead to a lack of concentration, motivation and mobilization showing by referees in many matches. I really like to watch Premier League, but referees performances are mostly poor and will be often 7.0-7.4 in UEFA scale...

    1. Brazil out:
Evandro Rogerio Roman (main) and Carlos Berkenbrock, Roberto Braatz, Dibert Pedrosa Moises (assistants)

      Colombia out:
Juan Sebastian Restrepo Lemus, Ramiro Alberto Suarez Zuluga (main) and Abraham David Gonzalez Torres (assistant)

Interesting remark is that only Roberto Braatz is out due to age limit...

      Delete
    2. I may explain some changes: Suarez is out because an injury which let him out the hole second half of the year, so that he was not able to do the fitness test. Restrepo is out due to bad performances this year (i never knew why he was Fifa ref, but he is still very young and he would be able to come back in every single moment.
Gonzalez, 2 WC assistant referee had physical problems, he was moving slowly and its said he was not able to donthe fitness test, its also said he had a problem with his age (he was older than the paper say)
In Brasil I can tell you Roman was out because of work problems (he had also lost several times the fitness test, so that there was no more time for refereeing) And about the ARs I have no info, the only thing is that as Yun said Braatz is now over 45

  16. The only Italian change on the FIFA list is confirmed: Maggiani (09/04/1968) out and Giallatini (04/07/1975) in.
Maggiani is out from the list not for age limit, but for technical choice.

Nicholas Waldron (1982) is the new NZL FIFA referee.

    1. I remember a Nick Waldron having been an assistant on Hester's side, and at Confed Cup 2009, he was suddenly removed from his side (same goes for Brent Best) and then Hintz and Rule came.

  20. A remarkable change is that Emmanuel Boisdenghien and Huseyin Ocak of France have left the list. I only saw Ocak once, he was good. Does anybody know why they are dropped?
Furthermore, Debart and Haquette are moving up, although Nicolas Danos and Philippe Jeanne got a lot in EL this year without being FIFA listed.

    1. Anonymous4/1/13 16:40

Danos became FIFA-Assistant 2013, too (Capelli out). Reasons concerning Ocak? Do not know! I think, Jeanne is very very young and he will get his badge in future, if he shows consistent performances on Gautiers or Turpins side.

      Delete
    2. Oh yes absolutely, good.
The thing with Ocak is really strange, because he was also frequently appointed in Ligue 1.

      Delete
  21. Matthias Arnet has left international assistant refereeing, he was also a very good assistant.

    ReplyDelete
  22. A few words also on England and Spain.
Spain gets both a FIFA referee more and a FIFA assistant more. Now in the race Teodora Sobrino Magán, who had so far accompanied Miguel Perez Lasa and who now got an appointment for tomorrow along with Del Cerro Grande. So a new team working together seems to be Del Cerro/Sobrino Magán.

In England, Scott Ledger, my personal favourite, did not move up to FIFA list. However, Simon Bennett and Darren England are there now. Watts and Richardson have expectedly retired.
