  1. Deploying the confirmation bias we can easily say: "Totally expected appointment" - might be, but it means that one of Rizzoli, Skomina and Proenca won't get anything in CL. And as I am convinced that Rizzoli is plan A for Wembley and Skomina is rewarded for his good season, too, there is only the worldreferee, CL final and EURO final referee 2012 left. And that would be a huge surprise.

Why do you think Rizzoli will get CL final after his mistake in Malaga-Porto, he disalowed regular goal. The biggest mistake in football is to give a goal when it wasn't and opposite, not to give a goal when it was regularly scored. My predictions were Webb, Proenca, Kuipers and Kassai for semis, and I'm sure Proenca will get Barca-Bayern. A this moment, if I have to choose between Rizzoli and Skomina for CL final, Skomina it is. I don't remember any cotroversials with him this season. Rizzoli had his with that disallowed goal, Cakir we all know. Any other name than Cakir, Rizzoli or Skomina would be a big surprise for me.

    2. I think Rizzoli will get it because Collina had already planned to do so at Euro 2012, which was impossible due to Italy's participation in it. Furthermore, he savours independence from all the teams (nationality and this season's matches), has experience etc..
But we all know it is not his best season. Well I would dare to say if Rizzoli gets Wembley then one knows how important Ilkka Koho as the observer in Málaga must have been (Chefren's phrase in a mail, I can only repeat it here).

Lannoy and Cakir. Perhaps they are not out..we must wait. I however think Skomina gets a Camp Nou assignment.

Lannoy can have a EL semifinal because Lannoy, Annonier, Cano, Gautier and Buquet aren't appointed in Ligue1/Ligue2/French Cup next week.

Khedira's tackle was highly dangerous because of straightened leg and exposed studs. Borderline call - YC/RC. Bender card was wrong - it was creating contact by Ronaldo who should've been booked for that and indirect free kick should've been awarded to Borussia.

  2. Expected appointment, but Proença out of the whole KO stage is surely a piece of news.
His performance in the 3 group stage matches were not excellent, but probably they also considered that one year ago he got CL and EURO2012 final, so now a bit of "rest" is anyway acceptable.
I'm sure that Skomina will handle Barça - Bayern and I see Rizzoli for the final. There aren't other names.
Furthermore, Brych in a EL 2nd leg semifinal on Thursday.

Could Howard Webb's appointment for REAL MADRID - BORUSSIA DORTMUND mean that FC BARCELONA - BAYERN MÜNCHEN on Wednesday will be handled by a referee who whistled either Real or Dortmund in the quarter final?

Otherwise, it could have made sense to nominate Webb for BARCELONA - BAYERN instead after having overseen a match with Dortmund involvement in the Round of 16. If so, even Stéphane Lannoy could be an option.

    Kind regards from Vienna,
    Peter

  4. Well done young Michael Oliver for his appointment. I thought they would go for someone more experienced suchas Marriner. However, here in England Oliver has had a stellar season. He and Taylor have very bright futures indeed.

As for Webb? Well, when he performs well he us one of the best in Europe IMO. So I have no quarrels with his appointment.

I gave a sneaky feeling that Skomina will be without CL match as he handled the Super cup. I think he will get a EL game. You can't just leave out a Euro 2012 and CL final referee. Rizzoli for the final for me.

  5. I agree, Howard Webb in a shape comparable to Russia-Czech Republic or Czech Republic-Portugal at Euro 2012 is one of the best referees we have - he must show that more often for my taste.
Unfortunately I will have no time to publish these match background posts for the CL matches this week. I'll try it but cannot ensure it.

  6. For me Proenca should have the other semifinal since Skomina had already the Super Cup earlier this year.

As for the final everything points to one person: Rizzoli.

However I don't know if UEFA is going to surprise us with an outsider like Mallenco or Velasco.

It basically can only be Benfica-Fenerbahce. Brych for Chelsea-Basel? Or Eriksson would also suit fine.

As mentioned earlier, Webb was a must in UCL semi-finals without any English teams; no surprise here.

Lannoy (and Brych) for 1/2 final, who will be the ref for the final?

Eriksson is a strong candidate, but why not Kuipers? Really good season for him. Mallenco maybe? After the appointments, there are really not much candidates for the final in my opinion.

Also Skomina is a candidate I think. Skomina EL Final, Rizzoli CL Final and Proenca 1/2 final CL.

Skomina CL semifinal, Brych and Lannoy EL semifinals, Rizzoli CL final, Eriksson EL final.

  10. I think Rizzoli for CL. If the final was not at Wembley I would think Cakir might be a candidate, but I don't think UEFA will risk Cakir at CL. If Fenerbahce doesn't qualify to final (as a Turk I hope they qualify) Cakir might be in Amsterdam... Otherwise my candidates are Eriksson or Proença in EL final.

  11. I'm thinking Proenca for the other semifinal in CL.

    Lannoy for Benfica-Fenerbahce
    Eriksson for Chelsea-Basel

  12. A reason why Skomina must be in Barcelona actually.
We know he is liked by the committee, got the Super Cup final and so on. From what we know, Rizzoli is however considered for the final. Skomina's matches have been without exception fine this season, the only slight polemic was when he sent off an Anderlecht player for dogso although which was ruled as wrong by Collina in an interview.
Thus, I think in a sum, a semifinal would be deserved. As far as I know, Mitja Zganec of Slovenia is injured. This means, there are on paper two FIFA additional assistants who can go with Skomina: Vincic and Jug. In UCL, it is very likely that all officials have to wear the badge. Vincic must be in Slovakia though on 2 or 3 May to attend the u17 tournament. This means he cannot have a match on 2 May (= no Europa League), as according to the flight schedules, he would not be able to take a return flight to Slovakia in time..he would be there, at the u17 tournament, with delay.
I do not think that Ponis accompanies Skomina, so I see here a reason for Camp Nou.

I´m quite sure that Proenca will go to Camp Nou. No other match in KO-stage is possible for him with regard to Benfica´s presence in EL-semi...
      I expect Skomina in EL-final

  17. Webb could have gave Coentrao a red for a tackle on Lewandowski. He got away with a yellow but, it was a nasty challenge.

  18. Boring first half until now.. almost nothing happened

  19. In my opinion Webb is allowing too many wasting of time to Borussia, and especially their keeper.

  20. Philipp S30/4/13 21:39

In my opinion Webb is allowing too much elbow by Ramos ;)
In the situtations with Weidenfeller, Webb told him to go to another place, so it is not only Weidenfeller's fault. But should however be yellow, if he continues like that.
But in general, a good performance so far.

  21. Anonymous30/4/13 21:40

Webb has hard work! He made some minor mistakes - Coentrao's yellow could be a red but yellow is acceptable, too. Then, he's failing to control Lewandowski-Ramos duels. Ramos should've been booked twice! Apart from that, good performance by Webb in very challenging game.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Strange half

Hate to say it, but strangely reminiscent of Brych in Real v United, I think Webb has reacted to crowd / Madrid player reaction/persistent complaining.

    e.g.s

Missed YC twice Ramos on Lewandowski, forearm.

Coentrao could have seen red, but YC probably right for occasion.

Ronaldo theatrically earns freekick with 5 mins to the end of the half - potentially even a YC for simulation as Bender does little wrong.

Soft freekick to Alonso with 10 mins to go

BUT despite slight inconsistencies his Match Control has been outstanding, and thus his half is arguably 8.4 (this is what I mean by giving too much emphasis to individual decisions at times as observers, must be overall context)

    Cann outstanding on 6-7 offsides

Mularkey on line too - one missed (foot up) for foul throw Coentrao aside (first 10)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anonymous30/4/13 22:43

Second half were easier and more consistent from Webb. Fantastic control - no riots in such tense atmosphere is a huge proof. Outstanding man-management and extremely clear gestures made public, players and coaches calmer. OK, some decisions were wrong, but c'mon really really nice performance by Webb and Co.

Will give you my marks soon!

  24. Missed handball, missed ellbows, missed studs up foul by Coentrao (could have been red), but in the end, this match was fully controlled, great personality, spot-on decision making for most of the time, great assistants and good dealing with additional time. BVB made it more exciting than needed, they should have scored the 0-1 earlier...for me a very fine performance despite some irregularities, 8.4 or 8.5 suits well.

  25. This performance really backs-up my theory of when Webb is performing well, he us truly one if the best in Europe. Cool, calm and composed as usual. I need to also mention the great performances of Cann and Mullarkey. Can't recall them making a single error. I agree Niclas, 8.4 or 8.5 is about right for this performance.

I disagree with the comments praising Mr. Webb's performance. He should have seen the many elbows to the face. If the referee is too scared to apply the rules in this case, "not causing a riot" does not cut it as an excuse. Real got away with many, many fouls because Mr. Webb blatantly decided to ignore them. Mr. Webb shows once again what everybody knows about him. 1) He does not award penalties in important games (Ramos elbow against Lewandowski should have been awarded and would have ended the game -- crucial mistake), 2) He does not send players off in important games. Poor performance.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ok, several mistakes in Webb performance, it's true. Neverthelesse, we can stil evaluate his performance as good. He was able to handle the match thank to his experience.
UEFA is surely satisfied, even more if we remember what happened in the last CL matches.
The standard now is low, the first important hing is to avoid crucial and blatant mistakes.
Then, we can discuss about the missed elbows, handball, and so on.
    Excelent Cann in offsides detection.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think Webb did well. He controlled the match as it was needed and didn't let the players get out of hand. Couple of mistakes occur in every match but if after a game like this every player from each team can still go to shake his hand means that he gained their respect. This is important. He kept his cool and managed the time and players well. His calm gestures at the end of the match were wonderful! We should praise these referees instead of killing them with our comments.

    Terve!

    ***

I evaluated main referee's performance as 8.8 due to fantastic control reached by excellent man-management and plastic, clear gestures that explained decision well.
However, the match doesn't include crucial calls, so can be described as 'only' challenging, therefore overall mark is not 8.9-9.0.

Then, I must decrease the final mark by 0,5:
0,1 - missed YC to Ramos in 37',
0,1 - YC to Bender, should be YC to Ronaldo in 45+1',
0,1 - missed YC to Essien in 48',
0,2 - wrongly evaluated handball situation (referee doesn't play advantage nor give a free kick; I suppose, he counted that handball as undeliberate one what was - of course - wrong).

Coentrao's and Khedira's YCs could be RCs as well, especially the first one, but in real pace and taking the atmosphere into regard, one must defend both referee's calls and say they were just acceptable.

    So, 8.8 - 0,5 = 8.3

    ***

Assistant no.1 had amazing evening, getting everything correct! Many borderline situations from which every single was 100% correct. Nice fitness and full alertness. Well!

    ***

Assistant no.2 was far less challenged than his colleague but counted faultless performance, too. Good, expected level - deserved 8.4 - no more, no less.

    ***

4th official made his job in adequate manner, solving situation with Mourinho-Klopp little talk well. He was calm and had full control over the benches. Maybe sometimes he should've been more active but who cares. +0,1

    ***

AAR no.1 was right taking the big call right. He saw that the ball didn't cross the line after Lewandowski's shot in 50. He repeated 'NO GOAL' many times. Nice reaction, nice job, nice movements. +0,4 for that situation.

    ***

AAR no.2 had not much work, but get two decisions right. Bender could've received a YC for reckless challenge in 28', but Michael probably said it was minimal contact and fight for the ball, hance YC would be too much. Then, correctly evaluated Ronaldo's fall in 90+6' - both Webb and Oliver saw that and had no doubts it was theatre. +0,2 (0,1 + 0,1 for each situation)

Mourinho, who knows Webb well from his days as Chelsea manager, said the official should have dismissed Dortmund's Mats Hummels for handball in the second half and accused him of not doing so to allow the centre back to play in next month's final. "It's incredible and I continue to say the same that he is a fantastic referee," Mourinho told Spanish television. "But it's incredible that he didn't give Hummels a red card," added the outspoken Portuguese, who is a regular critic of match officials and has clashed several times with soccer authorities. "I have spoken to him (Webb) already and he didn't give Mats Hummels a red card so that Mats Hummels can play in the final."
