The UEFA Referees Committee has appointed Sweden’s Jonas Eriksson to referee Friday’s 2013 UEFA Super Cup match between UEFA Champions League winners FC Bayern München and UEFA Europa League winners Chelsea FC at the Stadion Eden in Prague.
Eriksson, who is 39, has been an international referee since 2002 and has officiated in a total of 75 UEFA fixtures in his career.
Last season, Eriksson officiated at six UEFA Champions League matches, including the quarter-final first leg between Málaga CF and Borussia Dortmund, as well as three UEFA Europa League matches, including the semi-final second leg between Chelsea FC and FC Basel 1893. Prior to that, he took control over two matches at UEFA European Championship 2012, among others, the long-standing duel between the Netherlands and Germany.
In July and August 2013, he furthermore attended FIFA Under-20 World Cup with the semi-final between Uruguay and Iraq as the pinnacle. He is additionally pre-selected for 2014 FIFA World Cup.
At the UEFA Super Cup match in Prague, Eriksson will be assisted by countrymen Mathias Klasenius and Daniel Wärnmark, with Stefan Wittberg acting as fourth official. Two additional assistant referees, Stefan Johannesson and Markus Strömbergsson also from Sweden, complete the lineup of the refereeing team. It is the first Swedish refereeing team officiating at a final since 2008, when Peter Fröjdfeldt took charge of Zenit St. Petersburg against Rangers FC in UEFA Cup final.

      Indeed!

And also a nice gesture for fourth official Stefan Wittberg, who will retire internationally at year end. Two Euros and one UEFA cup final. And also a member of Hansson's stand by trio in South Africa. Plus many many other international games for over a decade of course.

A great assistant, but also a really nice guy.

Question for Swedish Observer: What really made Markus Strombergsson to quit the FIFA List? It cannot be the lack of time, since he still travels a lot as AAR. What was the real reason?

In Sweden the official message has been lack of time, but that he would accompany Eriksson until the end of the 2012/13 season. But I am starting to wonder now... Let us wait and see if he joins Eriksson in his first UCL appointment too. If so, there is something fishy going on...

I thought Strömbergsson was a referee (not an assistant)? Are AARs usually referees? What about 4th officials? I've seen both refs and ARs doing that work.

  6. AARs are always referees themselves. Last season, UEFA implemented ARs as fourth officials. Before 2012/13, the duty as fourth official was always done by referees. An exception is that the fourth official in UCL / UEL finals is still a referee.

And the fourth official for Eriksson is..... Strömbergsson. But Martin and not Markus. Not so unexpected of course.
