UEFA Champions League - Referee Observers for Play-Offs

The referee observers for next weeks' UEFA Champions League Play-Off matches have already been appointed and indicate first tendencies with regard to who could potentially handle a certain match.

Nikolay Levnikov is the only UEFA Referee Committee member attending the sonorous match between PSV Eindhoven and AC Milan, while Konrad Plautz in Lyon and Manuel Mejuto González in Glasgow could be a sign for Elite Development Referees or inexperienced Elite officials in these duels.
The referee appointments will be made public by the European football federation on Sunday (and Monday) at 11:00 CET.

So - the only observer to wait for now is the observer of the Super Cup final. Then it is time for speculations to arise again! :-)

    Agreed... let's wait and see.

By the way, I am quite sure that Eriksson will not have a European game next week. If so, the normal procedure is that the entire team (Eriksson, Klasenius and Wärnmark) has a match together a week before the European game or so. Now, however, he is refereeing in the Swedish premier league tonight with only one (Wärnmark)of his regular assistants, while his other regular assistant (Klasenius) has a match on Monday night. This clearly speaks in favour of him not having any match in the first legs of the UCL playoffs at least.

Not the best choice made by Skomina.

  6. Reading the observers I would expect 3 ED referees.

    PSV - Milan
    Lyon - Real Sosiedad
    Celtic - Shakhter

But considering the EL appointments only 2 ED officials don't have a match. Grafe and Aytekin.

  7. Gräfe has Sevilla-Slask.

    Therefore I bet:
    PSV-Milan Mazic or Moen
    Lyon-Sociedad Collum
    Celtic-Shakhter Aytekin

    Interview Jim Boyce: http://www.insideworldfootball.com/fifa/13080-exclusive-boyce-promises-best-refs-for-biggest-games-and-no-new-tech

"It's an incredibly important committee within FIFA and I will try to ensure that the best referees are appointed for the major matches. There has been criticism in the past about certain referees being chosen for certain games. I will try and ensure they are appointed on ability and credibility."

    1. Could this mean that he will examine the possibility of 2 referees for some countries?

    2. "There has been criticism in the past about certain referees being chosen for certain games" - am I the only one who immediately had the name "Coulibaly" in mind?

    3. It seems that FIFA is extremely concerned about the next WC and doesn't want to repeat the mistakes that happened on WC 2002.

    4. Mistakes are natural and will happen. The only question is in my opinion whether political decisions like the confed neutrality rule (and principally having a forced and fixed number of officials per confederation is nothing else either) will be ruled out by appointing the best referee for each match or not, as touched on by Boyce, too.

  10. These statements make hope - but I am not sure whether African and Oceanian officials share this assessment.

  11. Has UEFA changed the time of releasing the appointments?
