  1. Sidiropoulos the new Greek talent?
I hope of course that. We need a Greek referee at Elite.
Very important observer for Mateu Lahoz. UEFA has still not decided what to do with him.

For Sidiropoulos is the fifth match for this summer.(he had three for Europa league, one for WOrld cup). I think he has the potential to reach Elite group. He miss some experience of cource.

Very good the commentary about Matéu Lahoz.

  2. UEFA made safe appointments.

Except Kruzliak, Mateu Lahoz, Sidiropoulos and Mazeika all the other referees are very experienced and well-known. It seems that they wanted the 1st Matchday to finish without problems.

  3. Andre Marriner seems to be getting many continental/international appointments lately.
I don't rate him that much but it seems UEFA/FIFA like him.

Marriner is not too good referee and I think that he don´t shall arrive
      far.

    2. I wouldn't read too much into that, with respect to eventual promotions etc as he is probably too old for that. I think UEFA see him as a very trustworthy official, experienced in one of the toughest leagues of the world. They see him as a low-risk appointment, of which I see a lot on EL MD1.
A lot of referees appointed who didn't make it to Elite and are very experienced due to their trajectory towards Elite (Gumienny, Borski, Blom, Balaj, Kelly, Schorgenhöfer and perhaps Jakobsson).
Then you have the referees from 'big' countries who may not have a high standing in UEFA, but have seen it all in their national competitions (for example Marriner, but also Clos Gomez and Fautrel).
Also some referees who have been eclipsed by a compatriot (Kovarik, Kakos, Yefet, Van Boekel and maybe Gil?).
As Edward said, just a few names for the future. However, many more are in waiting, perhaps we will see them on MD2...

    3. Very good analysis - probably on MD 5 & 6 some more Second Group officials will be appointed like last season. UEFA can then decide on possible promotions (e.g. Hansen, Tohver, Zelinka etc.). In fact these appointments are just a mirror of the current First Group. The majority of them has "no future" (meaning they are experienced but won't reach more than First) but has often proven to be reliable in these UEL matches. I specially think of Gomes, De Sousa, Tudor, Kelly, Yefet, Gumienny and further comparable officials when saying that.

Quick question: why do Kassai, Eriksson, Undiano Mallenco and Velasco Carballo not get matches? Can we assume safely they will be in EL MD2? Why are they not in CL?

As for Di Liberatore, could he be injured? That would be the simple solution, seeing he is not appointed anywhere (not even as 4th official).

    1. Di Liberatore had Derby D'Italia on Saturday, so he's not injured.

    2. Absolutely he is not injured.

    3. About Erksson, Carballo and Undiano: we already know (thank to Edward) that they are appointed in CL MD2. Spanish football federation has revealed that, and there is also Borbalan in another match.
Then, we give for sure all the other Elite names in CL M2 because, as you can see, there aren't Elite and Elite development referees appointed in EL MD1. For this reason, it is quite unlikely that they are going to appoint Eriksson (for example) in EL and not in CL. Then, there would be not enough Elite officials for CL MD2 matches....

  5. UEFA has 23 Elite referees who need matches on MD1 and MD2. UEFA has in fact appointed 12 Elite officials and 4x ED. Next matchday, there will be probably 11 Elite officials + 5x ED (or even First Group). At MD3 and MD4, 6 Elite officials won't be available, so that it is clear that there is much room for ED and First Group referees.

  6. Good performance by Andre Marriner, including a correct red card. The only but big minus was the 1-0 goal - Simon Long missed a clear offside in it.

  7. Fautrel with a penalty for Shakhter Karagandy (min. 50'). Mistake for me since the attacker clearly seeks the contact (if there is one). A match decisive mistake so far.

    1. I think this is an important test for Fautrel, he has Plautz as observer

      Important test for Fautrel?
I don't see what is at stake with him...
Obviously UEFA won't promote him to ED (he's too old on the one hand and Turpin will probably be the chosen one on the other hand). And since he's quite a good and experienced referee, there's absolutely no reason for demotion. So Chefren, could you explain why you think it's an "important test for Fautrel" ?
      Regards.

      Delete
    3. In fact Plautz is an important observer. Fautrel made a game decisive mistake in Hannover last year, committed a technical error in WC qualifiers and it might be UEFA is going to relegate him, as he has no future (like happened to Duhamel in 2012).

      Delete
    4. Anonymous20/9/13 01:03

OK Niclas. According to what I read tonight, a demotion is possible.
So, as far as french referees are concerned:
      - Lannoy is in Elite Category but he will be 45 next year
      - Gautier is in Elite Development but he had some difficulties some weeks ago.
      - Turpin is perhaps the better french official, but he's very young and it will be difficult for him to reach Elite Category before 2016
      - Fautrel, Chapron, Duhamel and Ennjimi have no future and could leave UEFA soon...
      - Buquet and Rainville are inexperienced
So, my point is: will there be a french official in France for Euro 2016? Such a shame if there isn't any.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous20/9/13 10:28

I don't think that anyone should be appointed as a EURO 2016 referee based on their nationality. Only performance and merit should decide that. So if no French referee is good enough - then no French referee should be appointed. The same goes, of course, for all nationalities.

      /Swedish observer

    6. Yes but we all know it's Platini's home EURO and there always was a referee from the home nation (Batista in 2004, Plautz/Busacca in 2008, UKR/POL fourth officials in 2012). As France are a football and refereeing nation, I am quite sure they are going to push Gautier into this tournament. And an alternative would be Turpin, but if so, they should start to assign him for CL or EL matches this season.

  8. Anonymous20/9/13 22:06

    Dear Niclas,
Thank you for your answer. I share your analysis: Gautier will be the french referee for Euro 2016 in my opinion. But, for me, Turpin is better than him and has a better potential.
