Pedro Proença to take charge of Bayern - Real Madrid

Portuguese referee Pedro Proença will return onto the turf where he oversaw 2012 Champions League final: His team will control the second leg of the Champions League semifinal tie between Bayern München and Real Madrid.

The German champions, who will have to recover from their 0:1-loss suffered in the first leg, have already met the financial director from Lisbon three times. Besides their unlucky defeat in their home Champions League final against Chelsea FC in the penalty shoot out, Proença took charge of their losses against Girondins Bordeaux (0:2) and Internazionale (2:3) in the Champions League, whereas there has been only one meeting with Real Madrid until now (2010, 2:0 vs AC Milan).

The Portuguese already refereed several matches in this season's knockout stage: the Sevilla derby in Europa League, AC Milan's loss against Atlético Madrid and Chelsea's late win over the Parisians in the quarterfinals. He will be assisted by Bertino Miranda, Tiago Trigo (ARs), Duarte Gomes, João Capela, (AARs) and Paulo Alexandre Santos (fourth official). The team will be observed by Referee Observer Dr Vaclav Krondl of the Czech Republic; Dutch Martin Sturkenboom will assume the duties as UEFA Delegate.

It's confirmed! Proença will be at Allianz next Tuesday! Personally I was expecting Mazic or Kassai.

As for Chelsea-Atlético Madrid, is Rizzoli confirmed as well?

I think that the Nicola Rizzoli will be referee of Chelsea Atletcio . For the final of the champions league my prediction is Cuneyt Cakir. For europa league final my opinion is brych or lannoy becouse this year is his final season as international referee

Forget about Çakir. Incredibly poor performance at Benfica-Juventus.

    1) Cakir wont get CL, Kuipers will be in Lisbon, I'm sure, expecially after not so good EL semis.
    2) We wont see Lannoy anymore this season, he had his chance and he was catastrophical.
    3) UEFA never cared about who is ending his carier, actually I remember only teo times when Cantalejo and Frojdfelst were appointed fo UEFA cup final in their last season. But in the other hand, FDB, Bo Larsen, great referees and never rewarded with important final. If I remember good, everybody believed Bo larsen could get final in his last season, and then he didnt even get CL knock out faze match. All in all, politics and here and there performance are most important factors in UEFAs appointments.

I remember that this blog was very careful with revealing "secret" referee appointments prior to being officially published by UEFA. How come that this policy (which I think made sense) has been set aside when it comes to Proenca's supposed appointment on Tuesday? Speculation is fine, but publishing appointments in advance is another thing. In my view, this article should not have been published.

    1. You cannot expect a site focused on football refereeing to not publish news that is already in the web for several hours on many many websites that focus on football as a whole. I understand your concern and that's why I thought about it, too - we waited a couple of hours / days after we knew it but as soon as it is no secret anymore, it would be slightly odd to treat it as such.

Very strange decision by Leee Probert in Manchester United - Norwich.
He whistled this penalty without booking the player. Not even a YC...
Really can't explain that. It was a paramount example of DOGSO.

Not penalty at all. It was at close range.

    2. The distance and the ball moving towards the hand defend the defender.. but keep in mind that the instructions are clear in terms of increasing the body surface when shots on goal are blocked by the hand. And the hand position was everything but close to the body / natural - at least in my opinion.

    3. Anonymous27/4/14 18:03

The point is that the defender was pretty close to the ball. It simply surged through his left arm, he couldn't avoid the contact. It's anything but penalty!

    4. Anonymous27/4/14 22:38

50:50 call, you can't say it was a clear penalty but you can't say it was 'anything but penalty' either.

      Delete
    5. Well I think if you leave your arm in this position prior to a shot on goal by an opponent, you take a big risk. For me, it is more penalty and YC than nothing, nevertheless I can try to understand a different point of view.

  15. As always, Duarte has switched his position with Capela, differently from the official appointment.

  16. Not the best choice by fourth official, wearing a red jacket. He can be confused with players, he should change the color in second half. This is more blatant since he is following the play on the sideline, as always asked by Proença.

    Dante - red card?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Missed red card against Ribery for a violent conduct, slip in the face. Duarte Gomes is responsible here. (AAR2). YC for Dante should have been a RC by book, but I agree with him in the context of the game.
Proenca should use the first chance to send someone off, otherwise I don't see how he want to keep these players under control right now.

      Delete
    2. Bayern's players are very angry. You can see it on Ribery, Robben and Mandzukic. I agree with Niklas. Someone has to be sent-off. Otherwise I fear for the worst.

    3. Anonymous29/4/14 21:49

Let's be honest. Proenca lost control at the end of first half. He should've booked Robben and maybe one more for provoking. Missed Ribery's violent conduct. I think Proenca rightly approached the match by being calm and not interested in talking to players, but then he should've changed this approach on more strict in cards towards Bayern players.

As for Dante, it's borderline, maybe even more red than yellow, but he didn't want to destroy a game. He was right with YC.

      Delete
    4. Yes, missed red card (Ribery), unconfident and insecure performance by Proenca, unfortunately. No YCs in applicable situations so that he contributes to the players approach (lack of control - unsafe gestures). He has to improve his performance and tactic in the 2nd half.

    5. Anonymous29/4/14 22:28

Yes, Proença not good at all tonight. He's lost the control of the match.

      Delete
  18. Ribery violent conduct is a a clear RC missed by Proença. I want anyway to underline Carvajal behavior, which "resisted" in a certain way without falling down. This is of course a very good gesture, if compared to many other players who always try to emphasize each minimal contact.
As for Dante foul, taking a look at this screenshot:
    http://img274.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=794002933_10323620_10203838707671730_39593719_o_122_19lo.jpg
one should show a RC without hesitation, but I agree with you on the fact that the match might have been destroyed with such decision (Cakir knows something about that), therefore sometimes when a YC is really borderline, it is better to give it instead of RC.

    1. Actually it's an orange to red card.

For me Dante does the foul fully intentionally.

  19. Astonishing result.. now the committee will probably think about an alternative besides Björn :)

Proenca was very lucky that the 45+2nd minute had come in my opinion. Otherwise I don't know what could have happened if he had maintained his approach. He tried it with empathy and personality, but it failed, he did not have the right answers in some decisive moments in half 1. I have to agree, he lost control 2 or 3 times. The YC for Dante is actually not acceptable, at least the Laws are overbount for sure. Disappointing that Proenca finishes his UEFA season in that way prior to WC. Fortunately the 2nd half was calmer.

    ReplyDelete
  20. No difficulties in the calm 2nd half now. In general, chequered performance by Proenca: YC for Dante still right for me, other points of criticism see above.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anonymous29/4/14 22:42

Two missed straight red cards is a pity. But that is what I saw in this quite difficult match. Ribery's card is difficult to see, but Proenca will have to face resposibility for that too in my view. 7,4 is the only possible mark in my book. Unfortunately.

  23. Yes, Brych is possible now, but no Kuipers? Exciting decision by committee (position of Collina and Dallas/Batta? Some words from Fandel in favour of Brych. Committee (UEFA and FIFA) knows Kuipers - chance/test for Brych with regards to WC?

    1. Anonymous29/4/14 23:08

Brych's chance will (maybe) be the EL final, the commitee would IMO make complete fools of themselves if they gave Kuipers only 1/8 final and give teams in worse shape like Skomina/Kassai quarters and even EL semifinal. Besides that Kuipers has somebody in his favor in the commitee too (Uilenberg) so Brych even though no Bayern in final has very very little chance I think.

I watched it again and have to agree with view that Dante's tackle was an example of red card. I fear UEFA observer (or TV spotter) won't back Proenca in this case. So, we have 7.8 without taking that violent conduct as crucial mistake by Proenca...

    1. My mark would be 7.7 due to the lacks of control / Dante YC.

  27. Anonymous29/4/14 23:29

Perhaps the worst performance by Proença of the last years. Despite of that, I think that he was lucky, because nobody will talk about his wrong approach and blatant mistakes. The missed violent conduct and the missed RC are both against Bayern, therefore the match was not influenced , merely looking at the final score.
Several lacks of control can be highlighted by a deeper analysis, which of course doesn't belong to fans mind, but Proença approach was really dangerous, if you ask me. A low mark, below expected level, is justified.

  28. Anonymous30/4/14 23:58

lack of control? for me Proença gave a solid approach to the match... what would you do differently? normally you guys are very strict against card control approach... Proença was very smart to let the game flow and make the players return to their senses... please realise that Bayern's side was humiliated and some players lost their minds... I can just see an experienced referee that was able to calm down the players and protect the show avoiding a card happy festival. About Dante "orange" situation...Proença's line was wide view and let it play... so although we can understand his decision concerning the line hewas following in first half the red card was justified, but the yellow isn't totally wrong concerningthe full match. For me was a strong and solid performance by the Portuguese team...
