  1. Italy - Serbia: AR1 Hessel Steegstra was touched by a player and suffered an ankle injury in the fourth minute of first half. He has been replaced by fourth official Jeroen Sanders.
Very difficult duty for Sanders now, he has been already overruled in his first (wrong) call by Gozubuyuk (7').

    1. Jeroen Sanders is a 'normal' referee, not an AR, if I'm not mistaken. Are normal referees also trained to fulfill the duties of an AR in cases like this? And Chefren, how did he perform in the end (if you have seen the complete match...)?

    2. Well, all referees have had matches as both AR and referee at some point in their career, however there are many referees who are better in one discipline and choose to specialise themselves. As a result, referees like Sanders have good knowledge of the offside rule, but what is difficult as an AR is vision and positioning. Taking myself as an example the other way, I try to specialise as an AR, I can make most calls well, I know the tricks to keep match control, I blow my whistle just fine, but my positioning is what I must work on and has led to my specialisation. It really is impossible to be equally good at both, especially at this high level.

    3. I think that overall, apart from two or three small mistakes (perhaps the one I mentioned was the most blatant) his performance was satisfactory.
Correct the penalty whistled by Gozubuyuk in favor of Italy at the end of first half. In second half I think he missed a YC for a dive (not in area anyway) and a free kick in favor of Serbia, but overall an expected level performance.
I was always positively impressed by him, this is the third time after Malta-Italy a few months ago and RNK Split - Torino in EL preliminary rounds. He is a solid referee.

Can't explain this RC issued by Gantar to Cuadrado in Brazil-Colombia...

    1. 2nd YC for stopping a promising attack I guess.

  3. Completely OT: a small suggestion. Maybe it is better to indicate the upload date in the 'Observation Reports' section, instead of 'NEW'. This makes it easier to see whether some new reports have been uploaded, especially since the reports now seem to be ordered according to the date the match was played (and not the upload date). But again, it's just a small suggestion :)

    1. Thanks a lot. From now on we will proceed like that.

  4. Greece - Poland (3-1)

    Referee: Dankert (GER)

Good performance overall with 1-2 inconsistencies in disciplinary control. Correct penalty for Greece. Also his AR1 (Haecker) correctly informed him that the contact is inside the penalty area.

However both AR's were not good. AR1 missed the offside right before Poland's goal. Clear case but AR was badly positioned. He had positioning problems the whole match. AR2 also was badly positioned in many cases. He missed 2 offsides.
