Gassama and Sikazwe were below par in their matches and both received a quaterfinal appointment. Another tournament with appts made on the name, not the performance, principle.

  2. Gassama is first name for the final.

How much can you achieve ONLY by reputation (even if you perform badly)..!

    2. Maybe Doué if Ivory Coast aren't in the final. Otherwise, Gassama for sure.

  3. I would rather say that these appointments are also based on trust. Gassama had a poor opener, but probably CAF thinks that this was "one" bad day and that he will deliver a good performance as usual like in his 2nd match.
Sikazwe definitely did not perform well and did not indicate skills that would justify this appointment in my opinion. Charef could have been a better option, for example. I guess Alioum and Otogo will get a semifinal then.

True. IMO - Charef, Diedhiou and Grisha deserved another match.

GASSAMA`s first game was tense and cincilating but could we recall his magnificient performance in the jus concluded WC in Brazil..He handle the decisive game btw Holland vs Chile..
No doubt he deserves an app. in the qFinal.

Don't agree. Appointment in one tournament should be based on performances in that one tournament, not on reputation.

  5. As for Waleed Ali, I did not watch 2 of his matches. But in his first he had a relative clear (almost 1 m) offside error preventing a huge scoring opportunity. 4 matches is quite a high amount... maybe a compensation for Sudan's association since their main referee El Fadil seems to have missed the tournament despite being nominated for it?

  6. It seems as CAF has appointed assistant referees as fourth officials in these matches:

    That's very strange.

    1. Probably they have listed only the reserve assistant referee and not the FO.

    2. You are right Edward.
Fourth official for Rep. Congo - DR Congo is Malang Diedhiou (Senegal).

He seemed to be influenced by the crowd.

  10. Seechurn has totally lost the control in the last seconds of the game, whistling the end a few seconds earlier and facing severe complaints by Tunisian players.
    An extremely poor overall impression.

    1. I agree, he was good till 90' (we can discuss if a RC would have been more appropriate in 63'), but then he blew it.

Unfortunately after the penalty kick all his decisions ended up in protest - no matter if the were correct or not.

    1. Agreed - great performance from Clatts. Surprised he hasn't had more top of the table clashes this season. Perhap he's showing the powers that be, exactly what they're missing out on.

Yesterday Rizzoli suffered a calf injury during Genoa-Fiorentina. He was replaced by AAR1 Di Bello, until the end of the game. Rizzoli assumed then AAR1 role, but he looked to be suffering, at least according to his gestures.
I don 't know how much serious is the injury, but he will surely face problems during the UEFA course on next week.

    1. Let's hope it's nothing serious since a possible absence from the YO-YO test may result in Rizzoli not having a match in the KO round.

Brilliant performance by Janny Sikazwe today: Correct straight red card after SFP/DOGSO and furthermore a given indirect freekick for handling the ball more than 6 seconds. Great!

    1. I agree, overall a good impression and a good performance in a match which was never really demanding, anyway.
Rare to see the 6 seconds rule applied.
The red card shown to Guinea keeper, as you mentioned, can be for DOGSO and SFP. In my opinion, both situations occurred.

    2. Nonetheless I have not seen any reason to award even 3 minutes of added time. 4 minutes were, IMO, exaggerated. The RC could have been prevented in a way...decided games don't have to be enlarged excessively.

    3. Interesting question if SFP or DOGSO. Your opinions?

Shaky perfomance by Gassma, IMO. Many strange calls, especially for (ghost) fouls. Generally a very soft interpretation of Law 12. And he didn't find a way to prevent the players from protesting. I'm not convinced!

Too obvious, Gassama have recovered from the dugout of his first match. He officiated in a calm body language and seige off his usual police gestures.
I think he had a good performance.

  16. Predictions for semifinals:

    RD Congo - Ivory Coast
    Néant Alioum (Cameroon)

    Ghana - Equatorial Guinea
    Eric Otogo-Castane (Gabon)

If there aren't problems in appointing a referee from Gabon to Equatorial Guinea. Otherwise, they could switch these two appointments, even though I did that to avoid the second appointment for a referee with the same team.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree that this ist the most likely appointment (including your comment).
It is more difficult to find someone for the final. If CIV is not in it, Doue should be the big favourite in his (probably) last AFCON. But in the most likely case of CIV-GHA? Gassama or Sikazwe seem the only candidates, although they had one of the teams in the QF.

    2. What do you think about Bernard Camille for the final?

      Delete
    3. Maybe too inexperienced, but he could indeed be an option.

    4. Janny Sikazwe or Bakary Papa Gassama for the final.
Camille could be an option for third place, in my opinion.
