I'm quite sure we see Mateu Lahoz in the final.

Mateu is one very bad referee.

  2. I didn't follow the performances of the officials at this FIFA WC, but only some news on this blog and on FIFA website; in any case I think that B. Camille, A. Matheu Lahoz, Sato and Fedorchuk should be the ones who will take the three final matches.

  3. I guess Mateu, Orsato, Sato and Vigliano for the last four matches.

    1. Your favourite is Vigliano during the full tournament :))

    1. Soft, but OK to give it.

BTW, has CONMEBOL bought cheap referee shorts by UEFA? (->14/15 CL kits) ;)

    2. agree. Negligent by the defender.

What about the second yellow card? Very harsh for me. Unless it was from persistent infringement.

    3. Went down very easy after he felt contact. But we get benefit of replay. No need for defender hand to be grabbing at waist.

2nd Caution was kick to knee -- very justifiable for me.

What a match Portugal-Brazil will be! Busacca showing he relies on Zwayer, even though he doesn't speak Portuguese, I think :)

    1. If I am not mistaken, this match will be the first time that Busacca breaks confederation neutrality.

I am suprised after Zwayer's performance in his first game.

Zwayer's performance in his first game wasn´t so bad. Of course, there was a wrong 2nd YC but that was his only mistake. So, I think it's a deserved QF for Zwayer.

Busacca is in Canada at the Women's World Cup, not in New Zealand at U20.

    7. Remark: anonymous comment deleted. Busacca can be criticized, but even he deserves to be pulled to pieces in a fair way. :)

What do you think about Brazil's goal disallowed by Zwayer in min. 22?

  6. 3 out of 4 for UEFA, quite inflationary, twice breaching the confederation neutrality.
Probably this is a reward for good performances in FIFA's eyes (not sure whether Zwayer was really good), as it is possible that GER and POR will qualify for the semifinals.
But for the fairness with other confederations, I hope that the semifinals go to other confederations. Though I rather expect that we'll see Mateu Lahoz involved in one of the final games.

It's natural we see more UEFA referees in final games, though I understand your point. Perhaps Mateu Lahoz is being thought for the final, don't know. Let's see how things will play out.

Can we assume that UEFA referees are always the best all over the world?

Are all 4 referee's from UEFA? Oh, only 3 are? So where is that 4th referee from? Oh he's from CONCACAF?
The other 3 may be from UEFA, but Cesar Ramos who by far has been the best referee at this tournament is proudly representing CONCACAF, Mexico, and Liga MX.

Looking back to the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup that was held in Colombia, only 5 referees (out of total 17) attended that tournament and actually went on to referee in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Those referees such as Geiger and Cakir made a big impression in Colombia, then went on to World Cup in 2014. There are 21 active referees in this U-20 tournament in New Zealand, how many have a realistic chance for 2018 World Cup, probably not many, I would say not more than 5.
