Catastrophical Performances with Consequences: Ivan Bebek and Arnold Hunter have been demoted

UEFA's Referee Committee has updated the Referee Categories for the 1st half of the 2016/17 campaign. There are only two changes: Ivan Bebek from Croatia has been demoted from Elite Group after only one year in the highest category. Furthermore, Arnold Hunter of Northern Ireland has been relegated to Second Group.

At their meeting on 8 June, the Referee Committee headed by Pierluigi Collina has only made two changes.

Ivan Bebek, referee of the Europa League game between SC Braga and Fenerbahçe SK, probably showed one controversial performance too much. The former Elite referee is demoted for the 2nd time in his career.

Northern Ireland's Arnold Hunter made incredibly clear crucial mistakes in Olympiakos vs RSC Anderlecht all favouring the Greek side. UEFA had then started investigations into the decision-taking-process and potential match-fixing.

All other referees stay in their groups. So: better show continuously poor performances and proof that you are actually no Elite referee than having one nightmare evening. That's the message sent by UEFA and I am sure that all referees have understood it.

  1. Well, committee was forced to make these choices, sorry for Bebek and Hunter, but at this level such mistakes can't be accepted.
For the Croatian, I think that this was really the last chance, after an international career characterized by many changes. In 2009 at the age of 32 he was already followed by FIFA. For Hunter, unluckily, the pitch showed that he couldn't aspire to Elite category.

  4. No real surprises for both. Bebek showed in 2 matches that he was never Elite. And thankfully, UEFA understood that.

About Hunter. I watched the Olympiakos - Anderlecht match in full. For me UEFA made many mistakes there. First of all Olympiakos shouldn't be allowed to play to Europe this past year for the known reasons. Secondly you can't appoint such an inexperienced referee to this match and to this stadium. I always thought that an experienced, Elite, referee was needed.

Sorry for Hunter. He was demoted, even though, I still think that it wasn't entirelly his fault.

  5. More of these are necessary in order to continue to raise the standard of refereeing in Europe. No referee should feel as if their spot is safe just because of who they are.
