What you should know

Clément Turpin is the most inexperienced of the 18 EURO Referees: 48 international matches and only 6 Champions League matches - nobody else has refereed less than that. It can be hardly denied that he joins the tournament mainly for political reasons (a hosting nation like France needs a referee...). BTW: His assistant referee 2 Nicolas Danos is replaced by Cyril Gringore due to injury.

This is no surprise though: The 34-year old is the youngest EURO Referee since Peter Mikkelsen (Denmark) in 1992 (he was 32 back then).

No wonder that Turpin is considered a huge talent: He went through several talent programs and has been heavily pushed inside the French Football Federation and also in UEFA. Among others, he joined a mentor program in the European football association - his mentor was Roberto Rosetti, the referee of the EURO 2008 Final.

Refereeing Style

Decision-Taker. Turpin's focus is clearly on making decisions and staying in the background, being hardly visible and radiating a modest, but nonetheless self-confident image. This is underlined by the circumstance that he has the highest sending-off-ratio of all 18 EURO referees (1 sending off in every 3rd international match).

His idea of refereeing. Be brave enough to make courageous and unpopular decisions. In many matches, Turpin did not shy away from taking influential decisions, regardless whether against the home or away team.

His Strengths*

1| Courage to take unpopular decisions.
2| Application of Law 12, specially Advantage Rule..

His Points for Improvement*

1| Huge problems in the Identification and Punishment of Simulation.
2| Stepwise Disciplinary Control, Verbal Warnings.
3| Co-operation in the officiating team.
4| Management of Additional Time.
5| Approach, Body Language.

Chances at EURO 2016

Given Turpin's experience, his chances to reach more than the expectable 2 group stage games per referee are rather low. But you never know. Maybe he will get something more - also as 4th Official.
