What you should know

Çakır is maybe the most successful of all EURO Referees just looking at his international achievements. He is used to finals. He was elected as The 3rd Team's Referee of the Years 2012 and 2015. He definitely belongs to UEFA's peak of top referees.

A critical career event faced by the Turkish professional referee was definitely the Champions League match between ManUtd. and Real Madrid. After his controversial, but actually justified red card against Nani, he had to fly under the radar during the next season. Probably he became an even stronger referee after these experiences.

We still have no sure information whether he will be accompanied by his usual Assistant Referee 1 who was injured for several weeks and therefore missed the Champions League semifinals. Also the planned Reserve Assistant Referee Emre Eyisoy was injured so that the team were completed by Cem Satman. We'll see who runs the lines in France.

Refereeing Style

Game-Manager. Çakır's main focus is put on managing the match and serving for the game. In former times, this was different. At times, he tended to take (too?) courageous, unpopular decisions like the Nani red card mentioned above. However, Çakır still is noone who sacrifices the Laws of the Game just for the purpose of maintaining control or 22 players on the field of play - at least in most of his games.

His formula for success. Calmness and Modesty.

His Strengths*

1| Match Control, Calmness, Match Understanding.
2| Tactical Approach and Application of the Laws of the Game
3| Approach, Body Language, Mimic.
4| Fitness, Stamina, Sprinting Abilities.
5| Evaluation of crucial situations.

His Points for Improvement*

1| Disciplinary Control (clear YCs have to be given!).
2| Actions against dissent and mobbing the referee.
3| Verbal Warnings.
4| Concentration at the execution of set pieces (e.g. players entering the penalty area too early).
5| Distribution of responsibilities inside the team (e.g. at free-kick situations).

Chances at EURO 2016

Çakır is, from my point of view, in the pole position for refereeing the EURO 2016 final. But as always: it will strongly depend on the group stage and maybe Round of 16 performances.
