  2. Following the appointment for U17 final, committee is monitoring closely Petr Ardeleanu (CZE). He will be at his second game after FC Infonet Tallinn (EST) - Heart of Midlothian FC (SCO) on the previous round. This time observed by Trentalange, absolutely remarkable. Indeed, along with Kralovec, I think time has come for a Czech referee at high level. I expect him for a game in EL group stage.

  9. Paolo Valeri has an EL 1st leg match and a CL 2nd leg match. He must be the only referee.

    1. Well, one reason could be that Damato (category 2 like Valeri) was busy at EURO and for this reason he is not available for now (at least some days of rest). Massa has a game as well. Very likely we will see Guida in the next rounds.

Very important news from Italy. Today Rizzoli released an interview to "La Gazzetta dello Sport". The most interesting points are:
    1) Penalty decision was made directly by him (Niclas guessed it right here on the blog), then after that, there was a moment of waiting because he asked Damato for confirmation, but the latter had his view obstructed so he couldn't help Rizzoli. However, he found the courage to confirm his decision by himself, he had frozen the touch in his mind, like a picture. He was relieved when he understood that it was correct, he looked at Schweinsteiger and his reaction.
    2) Contrarily to what I thought, he has stated that his next goal is the derogation to keep the FIFA badge even for 2017-18. He wants to stay on the FIFA list at least for other two years, because he has big motivations, he feels good, he is in shape, he wants to referee as long as he can do that.
Based on point 2, he could therefore be included in 2018 WC preselections.

Apart from that: his dream was the final, but a semifinal like Germany - France was however a great success, proof of the good work made by his team in France.

    1. If Rizzoli continues, he should be a safe name for the ConfedCup, I think. Together with Mazic, Clattenburg and Eriksson (if not retired) to make an early prediction.

  11. For games at international level do you think it helps if officials learn a tiny tiny bit of the language that game is being played in? For example, would João Silva Pinheiro and his officials who are Portuguese would it helped if they learned a tiny bit of English and Latvian for their game for Aberdeen vs Ventspils?

    Thanks.

    1. English is required at FIFA level. It depends on the referees if they want to know some words in other languages, I believe.

    2. Most players would be able to understand some English, I guess it would help to learn a little bit of the languages of the countries that both teams are from.

      Delete
    3. You are very optimistic ;) With 54 different UEFA nations and around 40 different languages, referees would face a busy pre-match-preparation :)

Eriksson once stated that he at times even yells Swedish words to players - with the aid of his body language, they understand him :)

In fact, some international referees don't speak that much English at all.

    4. I thought most FIFA referees who are from Europe speak some sort of English. I suppose it would help a tiny bit though.

  12. Kairat Almaty - Maccabi Tel Aviv
    Referee: Antti Munukka
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdmURsviXQA
    Minute 04:20
It seems that AR reported a conduct violent with ball away by player from home-team, which was later on sent off. What I don't understand is the management. Munukka whistles with a certain delay, ok, but still before the shot on goal, then what happens later is in my opinion not that clear. Munukka needs to talk to AR, then at first glance, he doesn't show the red card. He does that only some seconds after. In my opinion there are some points for improvement regarding teamwork, however the important decision seems to be correct, even though a better-quality replay would have been helpful.

  13. Hard decisions by Kristoferssen on Videoton-Cukaricki uncapptable red card.(2ndYC) Missed more clear fouls. His performance is weak.

  14. Shmuelevitz in FK Partizan (SRB) - Zagłębie Lubin (POL)

Strict application of the LoTG. Every single minor foul was whistled. The referee looked very focussed from the beginning. His attitude can be prescribed as 'fouls hunting'.

However, he tried to avoid issuing cards. It would be no problem, as communication with players was not an issue what is quite unusual at this level, but Čotra (ZAG) recklessly fouled his opponent in 27' and was warned. He committed two cynical fouls later in the first half and nothing followed that warning. Bad approach. Especially taking into account that Éverton Luiz was harshly booked for reckless tackle in the meantime (28'). Partizan players were upset about such lenient approach toward ZAG player and wanted to force Shmuelevitz to finally show Čotra a deserved yellow card. Israeli referee remained firm and calmed the players down. One minute later, he issued the first YC to Papadopulos (ZAG) for elbow. There was no good replay of that foul but it seems that YC was shown for tactical purpose and partially for Čotra's fouls.

In 54' Papadopulos made extremely silly reckless tackle and rightly was sent off for his 2nd YC.

Shmuelevitz is a referee in full alert through the whole game. He doesn't avoid preventive and disciplinary talking to players. No tolerance to unsporting behaviour and mobbing. Clear gestures. It's clear that he has no problem with speaking English. His positioning is overall OK: he enters the penalty area if needed, uses wide diagonal but sometimes is definitely too close to play in the middle of the field of play. He seriously interfered with play twice (17', 76').

8,3 for missing YC for PI and some lacks in positioning. The referee is able to handle EL group matches.
