  2. FK Budućnost Podgorica (MNE) - KRC Genk (BEL)
    Referee: Charalampos Kalogeropoulos (GRE)

That one is definitely a mistake. Kalogeropoulos has a CL match on 19 July. He can't have another one 2 days later.

    1. It seems as he has been replaced by Ante Vučemilović (CRO) in CL's game FC København (DEN) - Crusaders FC (NIR) on 19 July.
So the Greek will appear in EL. Can you confirm that?

    2. Since UEFA has Vučemilović listed, then it must be true.

I find it weird though, since the appointment was announced by HFF several days ago.

first card from 1:55 second red card from 3:41. What do you think?

    1. First case in my opinion mistake. Clear foul and penalty. Second YC for simulation? Definitely wrong.

I think this straight RC was for SFP. unluckily video can't help us, in case of contact (I'm not sure) there are arguments for RC, but surely in my opinion not a mandatory one. Perhaps YC (reckless) would have been enough.

In both situations, Jorgji doesn't convince me regarding body language.

    2. IMO, no foul by the defender, but obviously no 'schwalbe' by the attacker. There was contact, but no foul. NCD by the referee.

    3. RC for SFP is 100% correct and clear. There is also a good replay.

  4. Huge controversy in MLS as a new referee (Alejandro Mariscal) gave two red cards in SJ-Toronto yesterday. You can find them here: http://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2016-07-16-san-jose-earthquakes-vs-toronto-fc/details/video/82862 Thoughts?

    In my view:
The first one (Quintero) is very harsh, as there is no hard contact, and the studs are not manifestly showing.
The second one (Godoy) is acceptable, but again debatable (look at the video "another look at Godoy's red"). It appears as a clear stomp at first, but the other video seems to show a caution might have been better suited.

    1. In my opinion both situations could and should have been deemed as a serious foul play. The thing that more referees would have gone for a yellow card does not make those calls wrong. Even more, I would like to see more referees who really care about players' safety. Well done, Mr. Mariscal!

    2. Indeed, I agree that both are SFP. Your screenshot makes clear that the foot is well off the ground - at that speed, off the ground, hitting the leg, it has to be SFP (I revise my earlier comment of it being 'harsh').

Fun trivia: SJ went down to 9 players for 40 minutes as a result of the two dismissals, when the score was 1-1. They won 2-1...

  6. Norwegian referees replaced at Osmanlıspor-Zimbru. That will be played in Ankara/Turkey. I think it maybe due to coup attempt in Turkey.

    1. Thanks for the info. However, the match will be played in Ankara, it is confirmed. What is the difference? From Slovenia, a referee can fly to Turkey, but not from Norway? It would be nice to know more.
It is also possible that the Norwegian referee made this decision personally because he didn't want to go in Turkey...

    2. Maybe Slovenian referees are in Turkey for their pre season camp? They held it in Turkey sometimes in the past.

    3. Zganec was appointed Slovan Bratislava-Partizani ,but the match was cancelled. Maybe this is the reason.

    1. Even though at first glance it looks like the ball is hit, the challenge is more than reckless, this is in my opinion a SFP, considering also the hitting point on opponent's leg. You can't try to challenge for the ball by making such dangerous frontal tackle.

    3. To read the full article you have to be subscribed (and pay for it, of course), which I am not. There were quite a few interviews with Skomina in Slovenian media after the EURO. Nothing special or new to mention, however.

    4. Basically this interview sounds quite like this:

On football pitch Damir Skomina has the authority, his decisions have to respect some of the biggest football stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo.

Q:When you are on the pitch you have the authority.Who is(was) the biggest authority in your life?
      DS:My father.
      Q:He was strict?
      DS:He was,but not too strcit.
      Q:Ishe proud of you?
      DS:I think he is.
Q:You once played football. What happend, why did you stop?
DS:I played defensive position.Because of heart problems I stopped playnig.
Q:Father was suggesting that you become a referee, but you didnt want to do that in the begining?
DS:No.My fathers friend was refere,so he asked me if I want to try to be a ref.At that time i was 16 years old.

There were some grammar mistakes, but I hope that you understand what Skomina was saying completely. :D

    8. Hi, here is a part of the interview in the newspaper Slovenske novice (SN), which might be of interest to you and it's more or less related to the Euro 2016. The interview itself is quite long but some parts of the interview are maybe not that interesting for your audience.

      Here it goes:

''If I get injured, I earn nothing’’

SN: ‘’The statistics say that according to the number of international matches you were one of the most experienced referees. On a club level you were officiating five times the semi-finals of the Europe League, twice of the Champions League, the Olympic Games, this European Championship is the second for you being the main referee. A list of achievements to be admired, but there is maybe a bit bitter aftertaste that the officiating of the final match slipped away again?’’
Skomina: ‘’This is statistics; maybe I was the first one according to the number of international matches , which is due to being the international referee since 2003. I probably collected more matches than somebody who came later. There is no bitter aftertaste. The Slovenian refereeing team was one of the three teams, which officiated four matches. The achievement that we could only wish for. This is great. The final match is not my imperative, though I wish to officiate it.’’

SN: ‘’What is your main goal then’’? Is maybe the World Championship in Russia in two years?’’
Skomina: ‘’Definitely, this shall be my goal, time will tell. But to qualify for the World Championship it is more difficult. In 2014 only nine referees from Europe were assigned. A lot depends on a football tradition and the size of a country where you come from. For me this is even more difficult.’’

SN:’’As a football fan, how do you assess this year’s Euro? Were the matches good or boring, without surplus, as said by the (Slovenian) coach Srečko Katanec?’’
Skomina: ‘’It was interesting for me. This is a complicated question because there were many matches. If there was the Euro with eight teams, it would be more difficulty to qualify and only the best of the best would succeed. But it was extended and by that enabled that Island happened, which defeated the mighty England. Can anybody say now that this is not the quality, that this is not well deserved? Although, it is a small country, the boys worked extremely hard, made a team and won in a team spirit manner.’’

SN:’’ Were you also fascinated by Island?’’
Skomina: ‘’Definitely. At the match I was neutral; I officiated it by the system of the black ones against the white ones, but also at the semi-final match the whole stadium followed the cheering introduced by Icelanders. Afterwards at the Velodrome the French and the Germans cheered the same way as they did.’’

      ______________-

On Saturday there was another interview with Skomina published in other Slovenian newspaper ''Večer''. I'll translate part of it that might be of interest to you.

    9. Hi Sviat M & co.

Here is the small part of the interview with Damir Skomina that was published in the Slovenian newspaper Večer (NV):

‘’By hook or by crook, it’s up to a player’’

NV:’’ Your former (Slovenian) referee colleague Drago Kos appraised for our newspaper that you should have officiated the final match of the European Championship. The majority of the Slovenian sports public agrees with this. What was your personal achievement at this European Championship?’’
Skomina:’’ The Slovenian refereeing team, without them it would have not been possible for me to be successful, was one of the three teams, which officiated four matches at the European Championship. We gained trust. Therefore, today I don’t look at this Championship from the point that only officiating of the final is success and the rest is failure. The final match could be officiated by only one referee and his selection is determined by variety of factors. Absolutely, our refereeing team left the Euro very satisfied. Before the tournament the goal of each of 18 refereeing teams was to get the third match. After the group stage, when each team officiated two matches, more than half of them left the tournament. First we were assigned the third match and the fourth one was a bonus, which we earned as a result of our performance. ‘’

NV: ‘’In short, you feel that you have done good job?’’
      Skomina: ’’Yes’’.

NV’’: You analyse the national teams and study them, similar to what coaches do with their opponents?’’
Skomina: ’’Yes. At this Euro we were assisted even by an analyst. Before every match we had an analysis of 90 minutes of national teams which competed. The analyst presented to us the system of the game and he told us who played which position. We were informed how the system of the game is changed during the match; for example from 4-4-2- to 4-5-1. Our attention was oriented towards breaks. Who performed corners, the line of the ball flight, to which player, who kept, who pulled ….little things but details are important when taking decisions.’’.

NV: ’’What kind of a person can be a good referee? Should he be consistent, strict, fair?’’
Skomina: ’’Firstly, he should be very strict with himself. A lot of self-criticism is required. If you are aware of your mistakes you can eliminate them. If you are strict with yourself, if you love yourself, then you can give to others. If you are indulgent to yourself, it’s probable that you will behave the same way towards players on a field in moments when the management of a game and authority should have been required. You can be authoritative either with strictness or you can achieve it with appropriate attitude. A player must be given the opportunity to say it. Two offers follow; we can go by crook or by hook- it’s a player’s choice.’’

NV: ’’You are 39 years old and at the peak of your refereeing career. The challenges are probably still big. Where do you see yourself in the future?’’
Skomina: ’’The Euro has finished for me already. I’ve been in refereeing for quite long time and I only look forward. The new testing of referees is in front of me and I prepare for this. A new season is in the front door. My motto is to take each match the most seriously. I don’t set any long-term goals. The short-term goal is to stay on this level. In two years time there is the World Football Championship and this is my next goal, to qualify for this tournament. The task will not be easy.’’
