    2. do you have information about EL 2nd QF round appointments?

    3. Only for some matches, not all of them.

    4. u from Greece, not? What do you think about Mantalos? I' m watching him in Hungary...

      Delete
    5. Yes, I am from Greece. Mantalos is a good referee with some important matches on our league (but with also some significant mistakes). He is currently 36, so I can't tell what plans UEFA might have from him.

The only real candidate for promotion would be Tasos Papapetrou. He is 30 years old but doesn't have too much experience in big clashes to Superleague. I guess time will tell.

    6. He had many problems with in or out situations, he missed a clear red card and maybe a penalty. He has an interesting referee style.

  2. According to UEFA, no.

    2. Indeed, thanks. it has no effects on the referee appointments.

  3. In my opinion these are the most important referee-referee observer pairs. It seems UEFA recognize them as prospective referees:

    Orel Grinfeeld - Zdravko Jokić
    Benoît Millot - Alan Snoddy
Ali Palabıyık - Frank De Bleeckere
    Daniel Stefański - Nikolay Levnikov
    Charalambos Kalogeropoulos - Francesco Bianchi
    Sandro Schärer - Rune Pedersen
    Craig Pawson - Zbigniew Przesmycki
    Kristo Tohver - Levan Paniashvili
    Nicolas Rainville - Peter Fröjdfeldt

What are your thoughts? Would you add any pair to this list?

    1. Waiting for the missing appointments (we will have the "incredible" clash Lincoln [GIB] - Celtic [SCO]), I agree with this list.
A committee member for Daniel Stefański is surely the most notable appointment.
I can add that Jean Lemmer, appointed for Klossner, observes very often Elite referees.
Robert Kispal as UEFA delegate should be the former Hungarian AR...

    2. Also Díaz Vega an Sedlacek.

      Delete
    3. IIRC, Stefanski received many appointments last season but was never promoted. And now he has a committee member. Quite strange.

      Delete
    4. He was very often injured last 3-4 years. He has everything but health to reach much. However, UEFA maybe have plans with him. It seems Przesmycki likes him much as he was appointing him for many big clashes last season. We will see...

    5. I would add Harkam/Marko, not?

  4. Very rough play by Zrinjski players. Three very bad slide tackles - all of them earned YC - plus one elbow. The second slide tackle in 37' was more SFP than reckless and the same player (Ognjen Todorović) committed en elbow offence six minutes later. Legia player was bleeding but Clos Gómez opted only for a free kick and cautioned Jodłowiec (Legia) for dissent/mobbing. Poor quality of the TV coverage, so I can't say these situations were crucial mistakes.

36°C in Mostar, by the way.

    1. One controversy at the end of the game. Zrinjski players shouted for penalty (alleged handball). The referee let the play go.

    3. 1) I would say YC is enough. The challenge can be deemed only as reckless. So ok YC.

      2) It would be nice to have a good replay about the hitting point but watching the scene live, in my opinion can be enough to be convinced about a RC to be given. The ball is away, the challenge is really late and rough, however I think that the player went for the ball (not a violent conduct). So, SFP for me.

      3) Again, without replays it is very difficult. But considering that the player from Legia was hit, this looks like a reckless elbow. In case of whistle, I would expect a YC.

      4) For what I can say, not a deliberate handball. But again, very difficult to judge.

Due to the quality of video and lack of replays, we can't be sure about crucial mistakes, as you said, but we can surely say that the player from Zrinjski Mostar was very lucky to escape from a RC.

      Delete
    4. 2) I think there is no intention to play the ball at all. We can see that the player is upset by the fact that the referee (rightly) didn't whistle a handball, so he reacts angrily by making such a silly and very dangerous tackle. You are right that we can't say what is the hitting point but it really looked bad.

  5. Lincoln won against Celtic. I'm ammaized with committees feeling for surprise since they appointed Ekberg, one of probably top 5 second group referees

    1. I'm surprised, as well, that's really incredibile. I think Celtic will do it in second leg, but today the history has been written by Lincoln.

    1:24 - first, 3:36 - second, 5:19 - third

    1. First: Decision to award a penalty is OK but don't you think that the player who fouled (more) is #24? It's really important as the referee whistled a foul of #3 who was already booked and he had to show him a 2nd YC.

Second: Poor replay but it seems OK.

Third: Excellent positioning = excellent call. Well spotted small but important contact. The player who committed a foul was already booked. Dynamic and direction of action are factor for 2nd YC but close presence of another defender makes the no-card decision good.

Again we see that Carlos del Cerro Grande is a very brave referee who can reach much. His trampoline was definitely the Copa del Rey final.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I fully agree - it seemed like both #3 and #24 made a foul on their players, and second YC for #3 was a bit surprising and harsh decision. YC for #24 was more suitable (IMO).
Unfortunately, I didn't find a replay of another situation in visiors' box, when Hapoel #24 was booked for simulation. IMO, another brave and correct decision.
I've been also impressed of the great shape and excellent positioning of the Spanish ref.

      Delete
    3. On the first penalty. That's what I meant in the other post. This was an off-the-ball holding similar to Skomina's in FRA-SUI. Not 100% comparable, but as we often classify and typologize handballs, both actions could be classified similarly as off-the-ball-holdings. One is whistled, the other is not. Generally, the 2nd YC is harsh. I have the feeling that the punished the holding on the player who then fell...if so, he cautioned the wrong one.

Second penalty seems to be correct despite the replay starting too late.

Third penalty is nothing for me. The attacker slows down his attacking progress to be "contacted", starts to go to the ground a part of a second before a contact which he partly caused himself. Not enough with the benefit of a replay - clear foul in game-reality, so understandable decision.

  8. Interesting penalty in Ludogorets vs Mladost match.

Sergey Lapochkin waited about 3-4 seconds for his AR to confirm him that it was a foul and then he gave the pen to Ludogorets.

It seems as Rainville whistled a wrong penalty for handball (never deliberate) in favor of Legia.

    4. After watching it in slow-mo, one can say that there is an unnatural hand's position and move to the ball

      https://snag.gy/FVpkPh.jpg

A very harsh call. Is it a clear mistake? Most people would probably say "YES" but I can imagine that the referee will be backed by observer or committee if he explain his decision well.

      Delete
    5. OK, I watched it several times now. The ball is expected and there is a hand move to the ball. The biggest question is how was Rainville sure? Excellent call if we take into account how complex that situation was. Intuition or perfect (and perfectly quick) analyse.

      Delete
    6. I understand what you mean. Despite of the arm quite close to body, there is a certain movement toward the ball, true. But for me this decision is still harsh and I can't believe Rainville made such assessment in less than two seconds, too difficult, especially because from his positioning it was very difficult to spot. AR2 was there, but the fact that the handball was immediately whistled, should be the confirmation that it was original decision by main referee.
Perhaps one can back him, watched the replay, but for me still very harsh decision. Without the touch by arm, player would have touched the ball by body, defender had not a benefit from his action by arm.

      Delete
  10. I think there is clearly unnatural position of the hand and quite very strange behaviour from the player. Perhaps harsh decision but understandable for me.

  11. Tohver have had 2 interesting penalty situation after 27 minutes at Ferencvaros-Partizani. He whistled just the first situation, i think the second was bigger penalty. After the match looking a link about the penalty situations.
