  1. Soares Dias observed by Collina. We know that the Portuguese has been already included in 2018 WC's preselection and he has been confirmed for September's meeting. So now, is the committee in a way forced to promote him?
Knowing Collina, he would never do that, so this observation will be really crucial. Very important observer also for Jug.
Taylor back in Thessaloniki, after 2015 EL group stage (PAOK - Dortmund), in which he had a very good game along with his AR1 Brooks.
Very hot game for Stieler in Serbia with Francesco Bianchi. I have noticed that Ludogorets from Bulgaria get very often German referees.
Interesting observer for Bastien as well.

    1. Just saw the list of the 20 UEFA referees preselected for World Cup 2018... Who do you think will be the 10 referees selected for the main tournament, Chefren?

      Delete
    2. I am not Chefren, but nonetheless dare to predict something:

Brych, Cakir, Clattenburg, Eriksson, Kassai, Kuipers, Marciniak, Mateu Lahoz, Rizzoli, Skomina + Karasev. If Eriksson maybe goes in the meantime, there would be room for Mazic.

But so much can happen in 2 years...

    3. Hi Chefren, when you say "September meeting" you meeting FIFA gathering or Summer Uefa elite referee workshop ?
Has somebody the list of the attendees at Summer Uefa seminar in Nyon ?
Concerning list for 2018 world cup I really amazed by the exclusion of Orsato and especially undiano, who shown a huge regression in few years. uefa and Fifa are no more trusting on him.
Which is your opinion ? and what about the early exclusion of Zwayer, Aytekin, Oliver, Taylor and Buquet ? Fifa and Uefa government are insisting on Turpin, without chance to Buquet, in spite of his last poor performance at Euro 2016.
Finally my early early prediction for WC 2018:
24 Referees: Lopez castellanos, Garcia Orozco, Aguilar Chicas, Pitana, Ricci, Caceres, Zambrano, Roldan, Camille, Grisha, Gassama, Faghani, Irmatov, Shukrallah, Hauata, Brych, Clattemburg, Skomina, Kassai, Cakir, Kuipers, Mazic, Mateu lahoz, Rizzoli (or Marciniak if he will retire).
6 Fouth Official / Reserve: Karasev, Marrufo, Al Mirdasi, Conger, Kralovec, Collum (or Marciniak)

    4. One could have had a larger list, yes. But would it be sensible to have more than 20 candidates for at most 10 places?
And of those 20 places, 16 were occupied by EURO referees (would be strange to leave them out), then Mateu was also clear. That left 3 places, where we can discuss, whether Rocchi, Sidiropolous and Soares Dias were the right choice. And there FIFA/UEFA obviously wanted more diversity instead of having a second candidate from England, France, Germany or Spain.
BTW, I think, Turpin was not poor at the EURO...

      Delete
    5. Niclas do you think Rizzoli will be continuing upto 2018 considering he'll be 47 by then? I think Rocchi might just get a chance if Rizzoli isn't chosen?

      Delete
    6. @Soham
it is really difficult to make predictions now, there are still two years to go and everything can happen. You can expect "big names" in Russia, but they can fail. About Rizzoli, if the news of his call for the meeting is confirmed, it is obvious that he will officiate until 2017-18.

@f Yes, I meant FIFA gathering, I haven't info about the UEFA course, it should be in August before CL play off, I think. Hopefully we will know more.

However, at moment Soares Dias is the only Category 1 referee among the selected officials.

      Delete
    7. Let's also say that basically I agree with the predictions made by Niclas, but again, it is absolutely impossible to know for now.

      Delete
    8. I really can't understand why you consider Mateu Lahoz as a certainty for the next WC? Just because he is from Spain? IMO the decision to only put 1 Spanish referee on the list is completely wrong.

      Delete
    9. It would be interesting to find out what Bussacca does with Milorad Mazic who had an absolute nightmare in the 2014 WC and was voted the worst referee of the tournament by some reputed sites but now he is usually a trusted and safe pair of hands... So his selection or non selection will be interesting!!!
Also I have a feeling that the 7 referees who took charge of the 4 QFs, 2 SFs and Final + Cüneyt Çakır are absolute certainties for WC in Russia unless they make some error of epic and colossal proportions in the next 2 years!!!

      Delete
    10. @Soham
To my knowledge that well reputed side is called redcardtheref.com and is completely fan based I really wouldn't rely on them!
Although to be honest they may have had a point, O'Leary tactically was much worse though.

      Delete
    11. @harry
You have a point... Coming to the best referees, I felt Webb and Kuipers and to a great extent Pitana were the best referees in the 2014 WC by some considerable margin... Even Nicola Rizzoli was a bit dodgy overall in his 4 matches... But Webb and Kuipers had no controversial moments whatsoever in the tournament!!! I remember Bussacca lamented a lot when he was forced to send Kuipers home prematurely after QFs because Netherlands team were in semis... So I expect Kuipers to be a part of the final list of refs for the Russia WC and he is sure to go till at least the QFs unless he commits some colossal errors... He would deserve it in my opinion, he is a very good referee with his understated yet authoritative presence on the field of play... I remember Bussacca also said that Kuipers' and Geiger's performances impressed him the most and in his opinion they were the best in WC 2014... So its likely that Kuipers is rated well by FIFA and Bussacca!!!

      Delete
    12. Still baffled how Webb was not appointed again after his great performance in Brazil - Chile.

      Delete
    13. I was more baffled as to how Kuipers and Pitana were released whereas Proenca and the disastrous Velasco Carballo managed to stay on... That was so so unfair!!!

      Delete
    14. "Knowing Collina, he would never do that". He did that with Turpin. Nonetheless, no one OUTSIDE UEFA mobbed for him, so quite a different case.

Nur, Soham: We will be healthier by not mentioning Busacca's management at FIFA WC 2014. ;-)

      Delete
    15. Indeed Turpin was an "internal choice" of committee, now with Soares Dias I have the feeling he is more liked by FIFA than UEFA, he had already some notable observers in recent times, but a decision about his future was not taken. I really think this game will be crucial, Collina could go directly for a promotion, in case.

      Delete
    16. @RayHD
I agree with you... But don't you think Kuipers did extremely well in the 2014 WC and was quite easily among the top 2 referees in the tournament there in Brazil? :/

      Delete
    17. I really don't think that hyping comparisons between referees helps a lot (Pitana better than X, Kuipers in top 2, Mazic the worst...).

What can be said is that football was better than refereeing in Brazil (in France, it has been vice versa last month).

@ Edward: FIFA's refereeing department is operating politically, we know that. Villar Llona will surely not accept to have no Spaniard in Russia. As Mateu Lahoz is the only Spaniard on the list, I think it's 99% sure that he'll be there.

      Delete
    18. @Niclas you are right and that's the problem, of course I wish always the best, but Mateu Lahoz will be very likely in Russia regardless of his performance in the next two seasons. But I must say, he can improve himself, before the promotion to Elite he had many very good games, then something happened, because in most of his games there were several significant mistakes.
We will see what will happen.

      Delete
    19. I don't disagree with you completely but comparisons eventually end up highlighting how politically FIFA works... In 2014 that's what happened, the better ones had to go home but the shocking ones were asked to stay... The generalised comparison between the performances of referees actually ends up exposing the truth that FIFA is driven politically!!!

  2. Soares Dias is back in Monaco after 9 months - he handled Monaco vs. Tottenham in last October. I am sure he'll make his debut in the UCL Group Stage this year.

  3. Is Skomina possible candidate for Confed Cup in 2017?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Who are the likely candidates for the Confederations Cup? I would have chosen any 4 of Eriksson, Skomina, Kuipers, Kassai and Clattenburg!!!

      Delete
  4. Good luck to Soares Dias.
He has many good performances, but he is an unstable referee ...
And he is no worse than most current referees of elite (such as De Sousa).
    I´am Portuguese.

Chefren, do you have materials for referee beginner like me?
I started following blog from 2012 and it became my native site:)

  6. Somebody asked for that a few days ago here on the blog, well, among others, Ivan Bebek has been appointed in EL on next week. So, no suspension for him, "only" demotion. He will officiate Spartak Trnava - Austria Wien. Tomorrow on the blog you will find all the appointments for next week's games.

    2. I checked highlights of first leg game:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9HEfwqUNNQ
What do you think about the 2-2 by Ludogorets? quick execution of free kick allowed by Strömbergsson, however we can't know whether he was right in doing that, how much time passed after the whistle and so on...

      Delete
    3. It seems like perfectly legal free kick execution.

      Delete
    4. However the atmosphere will be very hot and tense in Belgrade, take a look at Serbian fans after each goal scored, IMHO an experienced referee like Banti is needed, I don't know, perhaps it is possible that this replacement was a technical choice, surely Stieler has not still such experience.

      Delete
    5. Banti is a safe pair of hands from years. He deserves to be in elite but the presence of four other Italians makes it impossible.

Interesting situation in 1. slovenian league yesterday, derby of the round Domzale vs. Maribor, this is for 0:1. It starts at 0:43. Involved referees are in charge for Anderlecht:Rostov match at wednesday.

After pass from Bajde to Omoregie defender of Domzale Blažić scores an owngoal. Žunić shoots offside immediately, Jug and Obrenović (AAR) together decided to give a goal.

    Your opinions, comments?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my opinion the attacker neither challenged the opponent for the ball nor impeded his actions. No punishable offside offence for me and therefore a correct final decision.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Niclas.

      Delete
    3. I agree as well with Niclas and RayHD. The own goal is valid. No influence by attacker, the defender was free to play the ball and the opponent was not that close.

  9. Does anyone know when the appointments will be released for the first round of group matches at Rio 2016?

  10. Wow, Zelinka was very busy in the 1st half.He showed 7 cards in first 45 minutes, too me atleast 5 of them were deserved, some of them were maybe too harsh. It will be interesting to see in 2nd half how players will react, will they calm down...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It was 10 times easier for ref to handle the match in 2nd half. There wasn't some hard fouls like there was in 1st half, so players made Zelinka's job much easier in 2nd half. However, he showed 3 cards in 2nd half, all 3 of them were absolutely deserved .

  11. Very hot game for Banti in Belgrade, only 45 minutes and we have already two red cards.

I was at the stadium. More than 50000 spectators all standing and make very loud noise. Interesting match. Few key moments. 2RC 1penalty, some confrontations, extra time, 6 goals. Banti very good. AR1 is weak point of Bantis team.

  12. APOEL - Rosenborg: 10 minutes of added time, many yellow cards and three goals scored in the last minutes. Surely a demanding game for Raczkowski.

    1. Can you give the minutes of the missed penalties? I would like to check these situations. The penalty he gave seems ok, as well as the YC.

      Delete
    2. I found some situations:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RBv-wszHtM
      05:00 deliberate handball and penalty?
05:10 another penalty appeal for a challenge in the box
My opinions: about deliberate hanbdall, I think AR2 was the only official who could have spotted it, the position of left arm is punishable, because body volume is increased, however I can accept play on, problem is in my opinion that very likely everything was missed by officials, no reaction at all.
The following challenge: the foul seems evident, stop the video at 05:28. It looks like a kick on the knee, without too much force, but definitely enough. In case of no contact, I think YC for dive should have been issued.

    3. the possible penalties are between 4:50 ' and the 5:13 '

the goal of Fenerbahce is in offside . Rodrigues mistake (which will replace Bertin in FIFA's list in January)
