  2. Today, another interesting interview on La Gazzetta dello Sport here in Italy. This time, Collina talked. Among other things (this tournament was a success, the reasons and so on...), he stated that foul on Cristiano Ronaldo had to be whistled of course, but in his opinion not a serious mistake. He said it was not a mandatory card. He would have accepted the card as well as only the whistle. It was just bad luck, French player didn't want to hurt Cristiano Ronaldo.
About the success of the tournament, he repeated that it was thank to the tactical reading of all teams with expert coaches for all referees, together with the recommendations made during the meetings.
This work was not stopped during EURO tournament, after each game, the pool of experts helped all referees involved, especially the ones who were about to get the involved teams in the next games.
He also underlined that all referees seen at tournament were in very good phisical condition, and they were allowed to officiate only after strict tests.
Collina confirmed that penalty for Romania in the openeer was called by Kassai's AAR1, the same happened in Portugal - Austria with AAR2 informing Rizzoli.
He praised the teamwork Brych - AR2 - AAR2 in England - Wales (all three officials were involved in the decision making, concerning Vardy's goal).
Furthermore, Collina was in Nyon while releasing this interview, in order to make appointments for Champions League and Europa League third rounds.

    1. For the referees a success. Footbal terms, a disaster.

  3. Apart from a good overall impression Bart Vertenten has radiated in the first half, there was too little prevention and furthermore he took 2 important decisions incorrectly:

At 0-1, a Dutch attacker was clearly fouled (stopping a promising attack). Vertenten did not wait long enough and missed a clear advantage and team benefit: Another Dutch attacker got the ball and was free in front of the goalkeeper. It was, more or less, a scoring opportunity. The YC given was correct, but the non-given advantage was at least a significant mistake.

Correct penalty given in favour of the Netherlands a bit later. It was again the same offender like in the previous situation - but there was no clear SPA, no reckless foul, the ball would have crossed the goalline if there had been no foul, so... no card OK.

Missed a clear 2nd Yellow Card just before the half-time whistle (45+2') - the same offender again. Recklessly went into the opponent's legs with lightly stretched feet.

Apart from that, he could have issued more verbal warnings at some key moments (e.g. a strong foul at the corner flag minutes before the missed 2nd YC - not enough for a card, but a strong warning would have helped).

    Good positioning, movement and fitness.
