  1. Interesting to see some new names in the officiating crews.
Královec with a new assistant referee: I guess that Wilczek, after having failed the tests for EURO, retired. Now the choice is Nadvornik: Mokrusch only as fourth official. The question is easy: so why not Nadvornik at EURO (he was more experienced than Mokrusch)? Mokrusch paid his young age and the inexperience.

About Italy: it is the first time for Irrati as AAR in Champions League. Clearly a signal of the fact that he is about to get the FIFA badge on next year. At first, I thought he was planned to replace Rizzoli, now with the decision made by the latter, Damato should be the referee replaced in FIFA list.
Russo was Rocchi's AAR2 until the last season, perhaps for this season (it will be his last year in serie A) he will accompany regularly Orsato. Quite particular to see Di Fiore AR1 and Manganelli AR2. I would have guessed the opposite.

Collum: it seems as Irish assistant referee left Scottish team, but before being sure, we must wait for the next games.

    1. And Sidiropoulos has a new AAR. Koukoulakis has been left off the Greek Superleague List.

    2. I wasn't expecting Nicola Rizzoli for a first leg comparatively low profile match!! I'm a touch surprised with Young Boys v Gladbach appointments!!!

    3. Wilczek is still active in Czech League, but he is 45 years old, so it is logical that Kralovec has younger assistant. Why Nádvorník, I don't know. Why was Mokrusch in Europe Championship, again I don't know, but there are some conspiration theories, he is from Pilsen area as commitee referee member Dagmar Damkova and she helped him. The same case is the additional assistent referee Michal Patak, who was in Kralovec team instead of Radek Prihoda, obwohl Radek Prihoda is one of the best czech referees. Patak lives near Pilsen. Fortunately Patak had to finished his referee career (for 1. and 2 czech leagues) after some controvensial matches (mostly in matches with Victoria Pilsen, especially Zlin-Pilsen) in last season and doesn't appear in the list of referees for season 2016/2017. The best czech assistent referee is Ondrej Pelikan (except Wilczek). Most of people understand, why he wasn't nominated in Euro instead unexperiented Mokrusch? I hope, Handvornik will be godd choise.

    4. You are wrong, because Paták was not in Královec's team instead Příhoda, they both build this team together. Michal Paták is maybe controversial, but in any case absolutelly great referee. Radek Příhoda is also great referee, but Petr Ardeleanu replaced his possition and he lives near to Pilsen too.

    5. Sorry, thats true. Ardeleanu replaced Prihoda, but Prihoda was replaced, because he wasn't loyal. Ardeleanu is good referee, Patak only if he want.

  6. Completely wrong YC by Rizzoli, especially concering the 'new' LOTG (handball).

    1. I watched now this situation. In my opinion handball is not deliberate, so wrong decision to whistle foul, but once whistled I think Rizzoli can have his reasons to book the player, even according to new rules. Indeed it is a quick counterattack, without the foul player from home-team would have continued his promising attack. I think that now referees should try to read more the play before deciding for a YC, following a deliberate handball. In this case, for me it is an understandable decision to show the card.

  7. Orsato already with 2 penalty whistles after 20 minutes.

  8. Sidirópoulos at expected level in the first half. One more YC for SPA was possible. Good use of advantage. One different direction of throw-in than AR2 (and rightly so). Match with many tackles and physical play.

    1. Good from Sidiropoulos, I agree with you, one more yc for Salzburg player for SPA.

    2. Three key match incidents in the second half:
51' - Red Bull Salzburg penalty appeal, it seems there is a trip in the box
76' - penalty kick to Dinamo Zagreb, good call
80' - Dinamo Zagreb penalty appeal, alleged handball; there was a deflection, so no deliberate handball

Again one more card could have been issued, this time to Stojanović (Dinamo) but no major issues. 7.9 (8.4) unless replays show I'm totally wrong. ;-)

  9. Interesting penalty call by Collum. I think AAR2 spotted it.

Once whistled (one can have dubts if it was really deliberate) mandatory YC, but in this case one could think even about a RC, considering that the shot was clearly on the goal and it was very difficult for leeper to save it, in my opinion.

Deliberate play by Young Boys defender? Surely he tries to kick the ball, then if he touches it, for me it is an excellent NO FLAG by Tonolini, because the offside is annulled, following the deliberate play by defender.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The ball is last played by the attacker (the moment on the image), so about 1m in offside.

    1. 27': Clear YC, well given
29': I would have liked YC
37': Another mandatory YC, good decision
50': Yes, it looks like a penalty, however player from Salzburg made it more than it was, in my opinion trying to "force" the whistle by referee. Nevertheless, a penalty call would have been absolutely OK and I think this can be considered a crucial mistake by observer. What I want also to underline is that there wasn't any signal by Sidiropoulos. In case of play on, I think he would have made gestures. So I don't know how he assessed the situation. Perhaps, not enough for a penalty?
      73': SPA, YC is ok
      75': clear penalty, correct decision
80': no deliberate handball, I agree
88': for me, YC to be given

  15. The goal in BSC Young Boys - Borussia Mönchengladbach should have been disallowed by Rizzoli-Tonolini-Irrati trio because either:
    - the attacker played the ball directly to his teammate
    - the attacker played the ball and there was a deflection from defender's foot
    - the defender played the ball and the last touch was made by the attacker.

So either way it was, it should have been disallowed. Good teaching material.

Also noticed inconsistency in disciplinary sanctions and another controversy being an indirect free kick whistled in favour of Young Boys (was it a dangerous play or simple foul? where did the infringment take place? = we have three options: IDFK (doesn't matter if slightly inside or outside the penalty area, FK outside the penalty area, penalty kick).

    Highlights later.
