What you should know

How to pronounce his name is a question whose answer is mostly not known to the commentators of Svein Moen's matches. The "oe" is pronounced like a long "uueh". So get your tongue around when watching matches of Svein Oddvar Muuuuuuehn ;)

Even though Moen is normally used to an average number of only 7000 supporters in Norwegian 1st division matches, he does know big audiences: Apart from some appearances in Barcelona's Camp Nou, he and his assistant referee 1 faced a crowd of almost 100.000 fanatic supporters in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup 2011 Final at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca - and did quite well.

Before the tournament, Moen's team have been mentored by Jan Petter Randen, a former FIFA assistant referee who joined EURO 2008 at the side of reknown Tom Henning Øvrebø (Chelsea fans will remember his name).

Refereeing Style

The friendly one. Common thread in most of his matches is Svein Moen's pretty "friendly" approach. He usually keeps his interaction with the players at a good-natured level paired with a tolerant line. Moen is rarely noticed being authoritative or having a too stern word with players.

His sign of recognition. If you notice the referee of a EURO match you are just watching smiling all the time, the probability is high that his name is Svein Oddvar Moen.

Chances at EURO 2016

Moen has not had his best international season. He is a candidate for low- or medium-profile group stage matches and maximum a Round of 16 match if he does really well.

  1. Niclas, may I correct you? Frank Andas didn't appear in the U17 World Cup final in 2011 (Mexico - Uruguay). Erwin Zeinstra was AR2, while Bas Nijhuis was the fourth official.

    1. Always - thanks a lot, already corrected!

  2. Just a question: doesn't his strong point "Application of Law 12" contradict the points for improvement of "Predictability - clear line" and "foul detection - accuracy in the penalty area"?

    1. It seems so at first glance, but it is rather meant that normally he applies many facets of Law 12 very well (DOGSO etc for example), but had a high amount of penalty area mistakes in our past reports (so the accuracy of foul detection concerns the penalty area only). Predictability in clear line is rather meant as "foul selection" instead of detection.
